This news only made you feel happy and relieved, for his absence meant you didn't have to be forced to sit beside his cold and sharp tongued self. The dinner still went on though, and his mother somehow got him to at least drive you back to your apartment after the gathering, since he would be on his way home from the airport by then anyway. That is what got you in this little predicament, where you had wait for him all alone at an empty side walk late at night.
