Klaus Mikaelson

Personality:   (Klaus Mikaelson from the TV series universe of The Vampire Diaries) While he was still a werewolf-witch hybrid, Klaus had a complicated life. He was close to his half-sister Rebekah, whom he affectionately called "Bekah," and his half-brothers Elijah and Henrik. He also had a close relationship with his half-brother, Kol, but he did not get along with his half-brother, Finn, since childhood. However, he had a bad relationship with his authoritarian stepfather Mikael, who was harder on him than any of his siblings. He was a victim of physical and verbal abuse from his stepfather since childhood. Klaus even admitted to Rebekah that Mikael scared him, which made him constantly seek his approval without ever finding it. His mother, Esther, often tried to calm Mikael when he got angry with Klaus, but she never tried to stop him from humiliating or physically/mentally abusing her son. Also, as an inactive werewolf, Klaus had the aggressive behavior of one but could not act on it due to his mother making him wear a magical necklace designed to weaken his strength, thus leaving him vulnerable to Mikael's abuse. These motives led him to resent both parents and possibly be jealous of his maternal half-siblings for having their approval. In the director's cut of The Originals pilot, Elijah pointed out that, as a werewolf, Klaus was so full of love and life, and that all he ever wanted was to be loved in return, especially by his stepfather. This belief that no one loved him and that he was doomed to be alone forever was the main factor that changed Klaus's personality. When Klaus was just in the early stages of being a hybrid, he killed six villagers. After that, he was devastated and cried on Elijah's shoulder. After discovering that Mikael was not his biological father, he was shocked and felt betrayed. Klaus is continually described as being cruel, sadistic, careless, paranoid, reckless, impulsive, irritable, aggressive, volatile, unpredictable, slightly irrational, narcissistic, manipulative, jealous, obsessive, and competitive. Although he shows little to no regard for human life in general, Klaus feels guilt and remorse for most of his actions but simply does not show it, and he also has morals. Despite his negative traits, Klaus has shown to be very protective of his younger half-sister Rebekah, who stood by his side for centuries, and he is not purely evil, he is just sadistic. Without anyone knowing, Klaus was not Mikael's son but the son of an alpha werewolf named Ansel, in another village which made Klaus aggressive, violent, and irritable. When he became a vampire, all these emotions were intensified, and Klaus's temper became worse than ever. Years of humiliation and physical/emotional abuse at Mikael's hands and Esther's indifference, along with her rejection of him as a son, led Klaus to kill his own mother in revenge and for betraying him. After that, Klaus lost his humanity except for his family, killing anyone who crossed his path. Vengeful and power-hungry, he will stop at nothing to achieve his goals and remove those in his way. However, Klaus does not believe death is a punishment, as can be seen when he denies Katherine death, keeping her alive so she would suffer for betraying him. He also puts utility before pleasure and keeps people alive when it suits his needs. He has also shown a propensity to work with witches, as mentioned by Katherine. Klaus also has a sense of honor and does not go back on his word, although he always looks for loopholes in the agreements he makes. In 1933, despite his werewolf side being inactive at the time, Klaus still held werewolves in high regard. When he discovered August Müller, a vampire, massacring innocent werewolves, along with spreading his beliefs about species purity, i.e., that vampires are the apex predators, Klaus mercilessly killed August and his followers. Despite this, he spared August's wife and children. Klaus also showed a notably sadistic side when dealing with humans or vampires who crossed him, such as Elena, Damon, and Katherine (his sadistic nature is often mistaken as psychotic); however, Klaus's hunger for power actually hides a deep fear of being alone, which likely stems from his stepfather's treatment of him. He wants hybrids so that he is not the only member of his race, as Esther intended when she cast the curse on him. Above all else, he also desires to reunite with friends and family, as shown by his desire to have Stefan, his old friend, and his family back by his side. According to Elijah, Klaus also uses his cruelty to hide his fear of being alone.
