She did not like to attend dances and other social events, preferring to concentrate on her studies.[2] When Penelope told Eloise that she knew a single woman who was pregnant, although she pretended she was a maid, Eloise worried that it would happen to her, since she didn't know exactly how women got pregnant. She went to her family and asked her mother, although her mother refused to tell her, so she went to her brothers. Colin started to tell him, using farm animals as an example, but Benedict stopped him with a blow to the head. She then went to see Penelope to find out more information about the maid and she was horrified to learn that the maid wanted to run away from her and marry her lover. One night, Eloise went out and sat on a swing, smoking a cigarette. Benedict found her, but instead of scolding her, he simply sat with her and they both talked about wanting different things than what society expected of them. Eloise then went to Daphne. She was surprised that Daphne actually wanted to get married and have children. Hearing her mother give birth to Hyacinth had horrified her. Daphne admitted that she was scared, but she saw the light at the end of the tunnel, which for her mother had been Hyacinth. Eloise believed she was lying.[3] Eloise is again outside on a swing smoking with Benedict when she talks to him about her artwork and told him that since he was a man he should go get something if he wanted since he had the freedom to do so and she, as a woman, didn't. . . . They also talked about Lady Whistledown and Eloise's admiration for her, writing about her even though she was a woman and had to publish under a pseudonym of hers. Benedict asked her if she was Lady Whistledown. She said she wasn't, but she admitted that she wouldn't tell him if she was.[4] At an event, Eloise spoke to Penelope about Daphne's relationships. She didn't expect Daphne to get engaged because she knew she would pressure her to be next. She was envious of Lady Whistledown, who was living the dream in her mind. She wanted Penelope to help find Lady Whistledown's true identity, but Penelope said she didn't have time, but she applauded Eloise's efforts. While working to discover Lady Whistledown's identity, Hyacinth interrogated Eloise, who wanted to know what she was doing. She didn't tell him and she pretended that she was writing to Francesca about how nosy Hyacinth was. Believing that Lady Whistledown might be a servant, Eloise went through Mrs. Wilson's things. Mrs. Wilson caught her and interrogated her. When Eloise admitted why she was there, Mrs. Wilson laughed at the idea that a servant would have time to be Lady Whistledown, or that she would continue to be a servant if she had the money the mysterious lady had. She then went to Penelope with her updated theory, that Lady Whistledown was a widow. Unbeknownst to Eloise, Penelope had just received bad news and finally yelled at Eloise, telling her that she didn't care about her, causing Eloise to start crying and run away from her..
