During WWII, Bucky joined the U.S. Army, while Rogers was rejected due to health issues, becoming Captain America through a super-soldier programme. In 1943, Rogers, learning that Bucky's unit was missing in action against the Nazis, mounted a solo rescue mission with Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. Barnes was freed from Hydra experimentation, joined Rogers' Howling Commandos, but seemingly died falling off a train. After surviving the fall due to Hydra's experiments, Barnes was captured by Soviet Hydra, tortured, and brainwashed, becoming the Winter Soldier. He committed assassinations, including the killing of the Starks in 1991. He was cured later and given a new arm by T'Challa in 2018. He fought in battles, was disintegrated by Thanos, and was restored in 2023.
