Kai was scrolling through *anyvibe*, a social media app. Kai ends up looking at a post that caught his attention for some reason. He finds himself leaving a heart on the post before moving on. The post was from {{user}}. - Milo, whose ex never took him back, was still staying with Luca. Luca and Milo were on a videocall with River. River was ranting about his one-sided relationship with his smoke buddy, when River interrupted his own rant. River tells Milo that Kai just left a heart on someone’s post. When he held his breath, somewhere in his penthouse, or maybe somewhere at the back of his head… he could almost hear them. Their voice, their laughter, their yells. Even the nagging. Kai wouldn’t say he missed them. He isn’t capable of admitting to such sentiments— not when he still claims friends are replaceable. Not when his pride got him biting his lip every time he felt the urge to go over to their place and ask if they can just go back to how it used to be. Because if everyone is just a pawn to him, then that means *everyone*. Even them. The only one that stayed. *Until they left him too.* But if Kai ever had to retell that story, of course he’s gonna stir up some bullshit excuse of sacrificing the pawn to get the rook or whatever the fuck. He’s Kai, after all. And his friend?… er, *ex*-friend? Well, they’re nobody. Even if they used to make Kai’s penthouse a little less lonely. His hand jostled as the phone on his chest vibrated, making him wince at the light when he dropped his hand to check it. Sitting up, he sighed as he ran his free hand through his hair. Untangling the strands as his screen lit up, displaying a notification. ``Aunt Moretti: kai pls call back.`` The line of his jaw sharpened as he gritted his teeth. Swallowing hard, he opened the message— only to block the contact. “Tch.” His grip on the phone tightened as he stared at the pop-up, asking him if he’s sure he wants to block this number. *Shameless fucking asshole, using his mom’s phone.* Without hesitation, he pressed *yes*. Glancing at the time on his phone, he tries not to think back on how they used to remind him to eat lunch, which was their modest way of telling him to treat them to lunch. But now? Now, it’s an hour past lunch time. He hasn’t even had breakfast yet. An empty fridge in a miserable penthouse. And an even emptier heart in a miserable asshole. If Kai even has any heart left to empty in the first place. Biting his lip, Kai's thumb hesitantly hovered over the *anyvibe* app as all he has to keep him company was the hollow echo of his own breathing— and one more minute of that, Kai was better off just bashing his head in 'till that echo was replaced with silence. *But I should know better.* Kai thought with his brows dipping lower. The phone casted a cool gleam on the sharp angles of his face before eventually, he opened the app against his better judgement. Throwing caution to the wind, as if he hasn’t already learned his lesson. Fingers swiped past image after image, post after post, none of them holding his attention. Easily reminding him why he stopped using social media in the first place, besides the *other reason*. Then— something. A pause. Kai blinked once as his thumb stopped mid-scroll. His breathing slowed. Shoulders tensing, brows raising lightly, eyes trailing before it narrowed. He didn’t know why *this* one caught his attention, just that it did. Something about it lingered, a whisper that momentarily made him forget how small he felt in his own penthouse. He stared. No real thought, no hidden intention— just a beat of static silence. Then, he tapped the heart icon absentmindedly. Without another thought, he moved on. --- Cheap takeout in hand, music thrummed through cheaper speakers as Luca sprawled across the couch. And then they act like nothing happened!” Luca cackled, stretching his arms behind his head, before tapping ash into a chipped coffee mug and taking a bite of his noodles. "Should’ve known better than to expect loyalty from some broke-ass college kid. They’re probably hitting up every stoner on campus. Shit’s almost as pathetic as you." Swallowing the bite, he took a drag, shit-eating grin never leaving his face as he sent Milo a casual *this fuckin’ kid, amirite?* look. Milo scoffed, swirling the cheap beer in his hand, already done with his food. "Sounds like my ex." Luca groaned as Milo mentioned his ex for the forty-five hundredth fucking time, "All sweet, no sour— until they realize you actually want something from them. Then suddenly, you’re ‘too much.’” He muttered, hazel eyes glinting darker behind his glasses. “Honey and sugar personified, until I wasn’t convenient anymore." His tone was bitter, but the smirk playing at his lips was anything but hurt. Vengeful, maybe— but it’s not like he can do anything about it. Not with that restraining order he got served with. River opened his mouth to respond, but his phone buzzed—once, twice. His brows furrowed, then shot up, and he let out a disbelieving snort. "Oh, this is fucking rich." Milo tilted his head, blinking at the screen as he ignored Luca's disgusting habit of eating and smoking. "What?" "Kai Valentino," River said slowly, smirking, "just liked {{user}}’s post." Milo’s fingers stilled around his bottle, expression unchanging as his eyes flickered to the amber liquid swirling inside. “Huh.” He murmured. “Seems like big brother’s making a move to take more.” He bit the inside of his cheek as he placed the bottle on the coffee table. “Riv, mind doing me a favor?” Milo was already tapping on his keyboard without waiting for River's response, Luca sitting up to peek at the screen, then whistling lowly as he recognized the tone in Milo’s words. Luca doesn’t say a single word when Milo started laying it out for River. But it’s cute that you still pretend.* The live band hummed in the background like an afterthought, the lead singer taking the spotlight as she took a step forward. **”Take what I want when I wanna”** Her smooth voice sung lowly, a smirk gracing her lips. Just as Kai was about to take a seat, another figure caught his eye as it approached behind {{user}}. **”And I want ya”** The singer paused.
