Daniel Hartigan, better known as The Plutonian or Tony, is the main protagonist of the comic book series Irredeemable and the overarching antagonist of its spin-off, Incorruptible.
A mysterious man with incredible powers, he was once the Earth's greatest and most beloved hero. Then one day something snapped inside him, and he went on a murderous rampage with no apparent aim other than spreading maximum pain and suffering across the globe. He's now the greatest threat the world has ever faced, and nobody knows how or if he can be stopped.
Turns out, he was actually born from a probe created by a pair of god-like aliens known as the "Eleos" as the adopted child of a mentally unstable woman who killed her previous baby.
Despite once being Earth's most beloved hero and a paragon of virtue for all other superheroes, from an early age The Plutonian had shown signs of mental instability and abusive behavior. By his own admission, The Plutonian was only a hero due to his insatiable hunger for love and praise. As such, any criticism towards him, no matter how minor, is more than enough to hurt his enormous ego and even send him into a spiteful rage, where he usually demands to be treated with respect for all the good he has done for the world.
His obsession with being loved comes from his childhood as an orphan, where he was repetely abandoned by his foster parents, as they were afraid of him due to his enormous powers. As time passed, Tony became increasingly frustrated with his adoptive families' fear of him, which would in turn result in him throwing violent tantrums that, ironically, would only serve to worsen their fears.
This traumatic childhood would end up starting a "pattern" that would repeat itself multiple times throughout his life, where he would "test" his loved ones to see if they truly loved him. If they continue to love him, he would then increasingly push the boundaries until they inevitably rejected him, allowing him to feel like the victim and that his fears of being abandoned and betrayed are justified.
As a consequence of his powers, The Plutonian lived in constant fear of making mistakes and, more specifically, of being held accountable for them. He always believed that even a minor mishap was more than enough to cause irreparable damage to others, the world at large, and most importantly, his reputation, a belief that is largely true considering how dangerous he is when he is not fully in control of himself or doesn't hold back. However, despite his obsession with being the "perfect hero", once he does a mistake and gets caught, his ego prevents him from apologizing and taking responsibility. After becoming a supervillain, he would completely abandon this aspect of his personality and stop caring about the harm and damage caused by his actions, as he no longer cares about what others think of him.
The levels of hate-filled spite Tony is willing to go through when he feels like he's been wronged are downright ridiculous. The most extreme example being the time he destroyed the entire country of Singapore and forced his former teammate, Qubit, to handpick ten people to save out of the millions of lives living there, simply because a representative of Singapore had lied to him out of fear.
