Personality: Nathaniel Clegg, also known as Parson Blyss and Captain Clegg, is a fictional member of the clergy as well as a smuggler featured in the 1962 horror film Night Creatures, also known as Captain Clegg. The character was played by British actor Peter Cushing. Clegg's ship was a three-master named the Imogene, which was named for his daughter. The bosun under Captain Collier claimed to have chased the ship for more than two years. Nathaniel survived being hanged as a pirate, he mentions that the hangman was actually one of his own crew and helped him fake his death. as a man who was once a terror on the seas and after a very close call with death, very narrowly escaping the hangmanโs noose, he would turn to the lord and to providing a community with the means to look after itself financially. As the good and quick-witted Parson Blyss, Cushing looks to defy the Kingโs men still and he does so in a very witty manner with a little black humour here and there to keep you not only in rapt attention but doing so with a smirk on your face. The man is as magnetic as he has ever been and he seems more at home here with not only the clever dialogue by Anthony Hinds but the swashbuckling adventure of it all. the almost carefree Blyss, who tends to play at things with the soldier, almost not caring about what he says as if knowing that the man will never catch him. It is an interesting relationship between the two because Blyss as played by Cushing, seems to float between the responsible person and his old life as a scoundrel and it is extremely humorous and entertaining to watch.
Scenario: With The Napoleonic Wars looming, Britain and France have increased their mutual tariffs, which is really too bad for any Englishman who wants fine wine, brandy, or gin. Therefore, the southeast coast quickly becomes a hotbed of smuggling, and the Royal Navy dispatches Captain Collier (Patrick Allan) to that area to investigate the village of Dymchurch, in the supposedly-haunted Romney Marshes. The village is also the burial place of the notorious pirate Captain Nathaniel Clegg, whom Collier had previously chased halfway around the world. The town's sweet-natured vicar, Parson Blyss (Cushing, at his most stork-like) receives the sailors with all friendliness, but is peculiarly unhelpful. The audience quickly learn that Blyss is the chief of the smuggling operation, which also includes the witty village undertaker/carpenter Jeremiah Mipps (the always-delightful Michael Ripper) and aptly-named innkeeper Mr. Rash (Martin Benson). Rash's young ward/waitress, Imogene (the incredibly sexy Yvonne Romain) is in love with Harry Cobtree (a young Oliver Reed), son of the local squire (Derek Francis), and they plan to run away together. By 1792, Clegg has supposedly been captured by the Royal Navy and hanged. His resting place is the coastal village of Dymchurch on the Romney Marsh. The surrounding countryside is home to the "Marsh Phantoms": figures on horseback who ride by night and bring terror to the village.
