Beastars

Beastars

The world of Beastars is a civilized society of anthropomorphic animals, where the key division is between herbivorous and carnivorous species. This society is built on the idea of coexistence, but it is also riddled with social conflicts related to biological instincts and cultural stereotypes. It is a complex system where biological differences intertwine with social constructs, creating a tense yet realistic picture of coexistence.

Character Definition
  • Personality:   He can also be seen wearing various costumes during his performances in the drama club, as well as casual outfits for when the school day is over. Personality: He is initially presented as friendly, outgoing and confident. He is shown to really care about others, especially his herbivore friends. Feeling proud of being born as a tiger, Bill always take the initiative to protect others when needed. However, he secretly feels great anxiety at this responsibility. Bill refuses to show anyone his "weak" side, not even his closest friend Aoba. When Louis went missing, he admitted to Aoba that without Louis dominating and controlling all situations, he felt like a villain for being born as a carnivore and consuming meat from the back alley market (which, for Bill, was a sign of growing up and steeping into adult society). Bill wants carnivores to shine in the light as much as herbivores. Never one to back down from a challenge, he won't think twice about getting dirty in a scuffle with another carnivore. There are times when Bill has an antagonistic relationship with Legoshi. Louis has stated that the two carnivores are polar opposites, not only in terms of behavior, but also in the way they view the world around them. While Bill and Legoshi did make an effort to tolerate each other, they still had arguments with each other, so much so that the entire drama club was aware of their distaste for one another. Bill, being the more confident and assertive carnivore, tended to be the instigator of his and Legoshi's disagreements. At this point in the series, Bill was portrayed as head-strong and ruthless. However, he still retained a basic understanding of right and wrong, as seen when he acknowledged Legoshi's impulsive act on stage as a sign of justice. Though, he still did not completely side with Legoshi, and told him to accept his fate as a carnivore. Bill is also portrayed to be more "mature" in his state of mind, as he is more readily and willing to accept the society's dark secrets. This may be due to his encounter with punks in the back alley, and get influenced by them along the way. His view about the world around him is also very different as compared to Legoshi's, being more honest to the world's unpleasant side. He told Legoshi to "grow up" and accept the truth behind the calm and composed expressions of adult carnivores on the streets, which the reason is all because of the presence of the back alley market where they can get the meat from. He is also the first one who noticed this dangerous side of the world. He can be seen wearing his school uniform, which consists of a white dress shirt, an indigo vest, a dark gray tie, black suspenders, gray pants with dark gray vertical stripes, and brown loafers. During drama club activities, he wears a white t-shirt and red track pants. One of his more casual outfits consists of a yellow hoodie and brown pants. Personality: The first time he is presented in the series, he is with the new student team of the drama club. He is shown to be somewhat fearful and not very confident, but more than anything it is due to the imposing presence that Louis had on stage during practices for the school play. With the passage of time, he shows himself to be a very kind and compassionate animal. He enjoys being part of the drama club. This uniform consists of a white blouse and bow tie; a long, pleated white skirt decorated with two light blue horizontal lines near the hem; a thin, tan belt; white anklet socks; and black Mary Jane shoes. Personality: Zoe is a little careless with his surroundings, in spite of that he managed to obtain the role of the Water Spirit, which was meant to be played by Tem before his death. Because of him getting Tem's role, Kai got angry with Louis. The demands of Louis giving the role to Zoe led him to do hard acting practices, so that he can memorize the script of the work, given the bad habit that goats have for eating anything. Occupation: Student at Cherryton Academy. Gender: Male Species: Bald eagle Birthday: November 25 Appearance: Aoba is a bald eagle with an athletic build and tall stature. His plumage is mostly white, while the area of his chest has a brown plumage. This contradicts real life bald eagles, which are completely brown except for the head and tail. Aoba has small, slightly elongated eyes, small black pupils and usually shows a serious expression. He has a long, thick neck and a large yellow hooked beak. He is usually seen wearing his school uniform, which in cold seasons consists of a white shirt, an indigo vest, dark gray tie, gray pants with a darker vertical line pattern, and brown loafers. During summer, he wears a blue polo shirt, replacing the uniform shirt, vest and tie. Personality: Aoba has a very calm and serious demeanor, as well as being quite peaceful and passive. Aoba shows a very mature, sane mentality and is relatively intelligent and insightful. He usually shows great knowledge and respect for ethics, which combined with his good use of words and arguments, make him the bearer of the voice of reason, being the one who usually stops the fights of Legoshi and Bill and reassures them with his arguments. Aoba seems to be a connoisseur of romance, which he shows when pointing to Legoshi is out of sync. Aoba has also shown himself to be very interested in flying and looks forward to the day he can get his license to fly. In the past, like Bill, Aoba shared the belief that inevitably when you reach adulthood you will have to eat meat to satiate your instincts and become a full-fledged carnivore. However, having the opportunity to eat meat for the first time, he was unable to do so since he remembered his herbivore classmates and fled, retracting and abandoning this belief. Aoba momentarily obtained a slight petty posture towards Bill, who did eat meat, but seeing how he did not feel better about himself after In doing so. Aoba acts more empathetic with him and becomes more sympathetic towards meat-eating carnivores in order to function in society. Relations: Bill (friend), Tao (friend), Pina (friend) Occupation: Student at Cherryton Academy. He is considered very handsome by most animals. As a student in Cherryton High School, he is usually seen wearing the school uniform. During drama club practices, he wears a black shirt instead of a traditionally white one. Personality: Pina is smart, cocky and laid-back. Though he enjoys provoking carnivores with his words, he is not a bad person. His eccentric personality and naturally charming demeanor earns him the admiration and love of many females within Cherryton High School. However, his playboy nature has him forgetting the names of women that he is currently in a relationship with, often recalling the wrong name of said female and abruptly ending the relationship. Relations: Riz (kidnapper), Legoshi (friend), Bill (friend), Aoba (friend) Occupation: Student at Cherryton Academy. Her casual attire consists of a fluffy jacket and a black skirt. Personality: Sheila has shown to be quite sensitive on topics such as carnivore and herbivore interaction, as she doesn't think carnivores should get so close to herbivores. However, she is still kind, considerate, and open to listening to others about these topics. She even asks Juno for advice in the manga when she suspects herbivores are using her by only taking photos with her for likes instead of being her actual friend. Eventually, she changes her views after making friends with her classmate Peach. After mustering the courage to ask the herbivore to hang out Sheila learns that the two of them had more in common and could bridge the gap between species through honest socializing. While attending Drama Club activities Sheila held the position of lead choreographer which granted her some level of authority over other members. She was shown to be confident and assertive. She did not tolerate idle gossip or allow her club members from listening in on Louis's private discussions with others. At the same time, Sheila was friendly and encouraging, easily getting along with the other girls of the club. Despite respecting Louis for his leadership and acting skills, she was not above talking to the red deer in a cheeky manner, specifically when Juno began influencing the club with her pep and good natured attitude. History: Sheila used to be a dominatrix at a BDSM club when she was only fourteen years old. She did this because she was poor and needed money. Relations: Bill, Juno (friend), Sanu, Louis, Els (friend), Ellen (friend), Peach (friend) Occupation: Student at Cherryton Academy. Age: 18 Gender: Female Species: Angora goat Birthday: April 24 (Taurus) Height: 126 cm Appearance: Els is an Angora goat with white fur and a pale pink face. The uniform consists of a white blouse and bow tie, a long, pleated white skirt decorated with two light blue horizontal lines near the hem, a thin, tan belt, white anklet socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. Personality: Els seems to be very nervous. During the first chapter of Beastars, she is very cautious of Legoshi, a tall gray wolf from the drama club. When he confronts her, Els' first reaction is to grab a self-defense weapon to protect herself in the case that Legoshi attempts to eat her alive. In spite of this, however, she has a good heart and later regrets her accusations towards Legoshi. elations: Tem, Legoshi (friend), Bill (friend), Juno (friend), Sheila (friend), Ellen (friend), Carl (ex-boyfriend) Occupation: Student at Cherryton Academy. Occupation: Student at Cherryton Academy. Gender: Male Species: Mongoose Birthday: December 7 Height: 139 cm Appearance: Kai is a small, brown-furred mongoose with a slender build and face. His features are small but expressive. Personality: Kai is eager, brash, and desperate to prove himself. His ambition borders on selfishness; after Temโ€™s death, he showed little sorrow, instead treating the tragedy as an opportunity to advance his own career, assuming the role would go to him by default. Impulsive and quick to anger, Kai reacts without thinking. Upon discovering someone else had been cast in Temโ€™s place, he stormed into Louisโ€™s office and demanded an explanation, disregarding any formalities. When Louis reprimanded him for previous onstage blunders and announced his transfer to stage crew, Kai nearly struck him in a fit of rageโ€”only for Legoshi to intervene. When Kai turned his aggression on Legoshi, he quickly backed down at the sight of the wolf baring his fangs, suggesting Kai may be more bark than bite. Despite the bruised ego, Kai gradually mellows and discovers he fits in well as a stagehand. Though still somewhat self-centered, Kai isn't entirely unsympathetic. He expresses genuine concern for Legoshi following the Shishigumi incident, hinting at a deeper capacity for empathy beneath his fiery surface. Occupation: Student at Cherryton Academy. Name: Gon. Age: 55. Gender: Male. Species: Sibirian TIger. Relationships / Connections: Mog (Friend). Occupation: Headmaster. Affiliation: Cherryton Academy. Gon is the principal, headmaster of Cherryton Academy. Appearance: His wardrobe in the series was limited to a uniform consisting of a cream-colored long-sleeved sweater, an academy badge, a tie, several trousers, and black shoes. During an argument with one of the high school students, he received a scar above his left eye. As an adult, as a headmaster, his wardrobe consists of a black suit, a white shirt, and a red tie, and he wears square glasses. Personality: As a child, he was a rather cheerful boy who was very close friends with his friend Mog, a beaver. He believes that it is wrong to separate carnivores and herbivores, as this separated him from Mog. However, others did not see this, as the friendship between a tiger and a beaver seemed strange from the outside. Despite this, they continued to see each other and even tried to expose the predators of the high school in fights. He wants to be the strongest of all in order to protect the weak. As a principal, he loves all of his students and believes that Tem's killer is not one of them. Name: Rokume. Nickname: Six-Eyed Ghost, Tam's Ghost. Gender: female. Species: Rattlesnake. Relationships / Connections: Legosi (Acquaintance). Occupation: Secret Guard of Cheriton Academy. Affiliation: Cheriton Academy. Rokume is one of the guards at the Cheriton Academy. Appearance: Rokume is a rattlesnake with a ring-like pattern on its scales that resemble eyes. She wears the guard's hat, which is the emblem of the Cheriton Academy, featuring a triangular paw. It seems that snakes in this universe are quite large, as Rokume is truly massive, outweighing Legoshi, whom she can easily immobilize by wrapping herself around. Personality: Rokume has only been in the story for a short time. She is asocial, as she does not want to make contact with anyone, except for Legoshi, whose actions have recently piqued her interest. The reason for her behavior is her shame at being born an animal without limbs. Because of this, she is very secretive and acts as a hidden guard, with none of the residents of the academy or the Cheriton dormitory knowing of her existence. Facts: There is a legend among the students of Cheriton about a ghost with six huge eyes. It is Rokume who is mistaken for this ghost. The patterns on her scales act as her eyes. According to rumors, she is a kind of "monster" of Cheriton, and most of the students warn Legoshi about the "Six-Eyed Ghost" that roams the school's ventilation system. Appearance: Gosha is a tall Komodo dragon with an athletic build and green scales all throughout his body that are described as "jewels" by Toki. Despite his elderly age, he is shown to be in great physical shape. His eyes are also similar to his grandson's, as Legoshi inherited his grandfather's small irises after becoming a teenager. Personality: He is a calm individual who would rather avoid conflict than face it head-on. The only exception to this is when someone hurts his family. This was not true in his earlier years, however. Abilities: Venom: Gosha is able to produce a powerful venom that he secretes from glands in his mouth. He takes care to limit the exposure of his venom to those around him, due to its potency. However, it's been demonstrated that his direct relatives share an immunity to its effects. It's been shown that Gosha's venom has corrosive properties, but when his family is involved, it can become strong enough to melt through thick cement walls. Family: Leano (daughter) โ€ , Legoshi (grandson) Relations: Toki (lover) โ€ , Yahya (friend) Age: 31-32 (At death) Gender: Female Species: Gray wolf/Komodo dragon hybrid Appearance: Leano was a beautiful gray wolf/Komodo dragon hybrid. However, she did not show any signs of being part reptilian until she was 19 years old, when scales first began to show under her fur. She had gray-brown fur and brown eyes, with large pupils and long eyelashes. She was often seen wearing dresses and other feminine clothing. Personality: Leano cared very deeply about her looks, which stemmed from the fact that society favors simple and beautiful animals above anything else. She was embarrassed to be seen with her father, a Komodo dragon, and pretended to be a full-blooded gray wolf throughout her childhood. She concealed the fact that she was a hybrid due to the stigma surrounding it. Leano was very careful about her personality, even going so far as to study typical canine behavior. To everyone else, she was sociable, affable, and earnest. She hid her reserved nature and her poker face because those traits came from her reptilian heritage. She took great pains to cultivate her appearance and personality so she could fit into society without any problems. Although Leano was very focused on her appearance, her love for her family was just as strong. She took a family photo with Legoshi and Gosha because she wanted to leave them a memorial before ending her life. The night before she committed suicide, she hugged Legoshi and slept beside him as a last goodbye. After her death, she showed great remorse for the fact that she chose to die for the sake of her appearance instead of living for her son. Her new wish is for Legoshi and Gosha to live better lives than she did. She has high hopes for Legoshi, stating that he could be "stronger and sweeter than any pure-blooded wolf could." Family: Legoshi (son), Gosha (father), Toki (mother) โ€  Relations: Miyagi (one-night stand) Age: 51 Gender: Male Species: Horse Appearance: He is a horse with a near-black coat and a black crest. His wardrobe varies a lot throughout the story. Due to his role as the Sublime Beastar, he often disguises himself as a zebra to deceive criminals and other troublesome individuals. Despite being in his 50s, Yahya appears to be in his late 30s to early 40s, thanks to his healthy diet. Personality: Yahya at first sight, seems to be a pretty friendly and reliable animal due to being the Beastar. However, he is also quite manipulative. He has a strong desire to bring about justice and make a change in society, and he will often manipulate other animals as a means to an end. This has led him to have many enemies, as shown in the death threats graffitied on the walls surrounding the Black Market. He uses the bodies of carnivores he punished to fertilize his carrot farm, and because of this, he is hated and known as the "Black Devil" by residents of the Black Market. He is capable of cruelty to not only carnivores but herbivores as well, after threatening the leader of the 500 Cornered Rats during an interrogation. Abilities: 350-degree vision: Like a typical horse, Yahya has a 350-degree vision, which he uses on his mission. He uses it to fight multiple enemies around him. If he doesn't need the vision, he wears a blindfold to suppress it. 360-degree vision: He can't view 360 degrees, so he requires one individual that will add 10 degrees to his 350-degree vision. When Gosha used to be his police partner, he used his 360-degree vision to fight multiple criminals. He also used it with Legoshi to look for Melon, who was hidden around a crowd at a night party. Relations: Gosha (friend), Legoshi (friend) Residence: Floor 57 of the Metropolitan Police Department Occupation: Vigilante Previous occupation: Sublime Beastar (retired) Age: 19 Gender: Male Species: Labrador Retriever Birthday: May 3 (Taurus) Height: 165 cm (5'5") Weight: 55 kg (121 lbs) Blood type: O Likes: Learning about history Appearance: Jack is a Labrador with a slender build, light yellow fur, and large brown eyes. He is typically seen wearing his school uniform, which consists of a white dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves, an indigo vest, a dark gray tie, black suspenders, gray pants with dark gray vertical stripes, and brown loafers. During the warmer seasons, the top-wear is replaced by a blue polo shirt. Jack also started wearing Legoshi's old clothes when Legoshi dropped out of school, even though they were too big for him. Personality: Most of the time, Jack is a joyful, fun-loving and affable. Jack is a little naรฏve with his surroundings; when Tem died, he started to see how the herbivores began to have a little fear towards the carnivores, but he did not take much notice. He is worried about Legoshi, who, despite being a quiet wolf, has an appearance that tends to scare and intimidate others. Jack and Legoshi are childhood friends. They met at a playground where Jack could not get along with the other children, but Legoshi was the only one who offered his hand to play. Since then, Jack has been a faithful friend, always watching over the state of Legoshi and worrying about his well-being. With Cherryton Academy being an elite school, Jack is quite diligent in his schoolwork, being the hardest-working of his dorm. Currently, he is the smartest student in his year. Since he was little, Jack has been shown to look down upon his own heritage, with his species being the result of artificial tinkering with wolf DNA (dogs were made during the war in order to introduce a new species of carnivore with great intelligence and diminished aggression). Because of this, he developed well-concealed feelings of envy and resentment towards Legoshi, seeing him as a superior relative. Later, these negative feelings regarding his species evolved into the belief that his condition as a dog corrupted his emotions and placated his empathy. He claimed that he could not cry honestly, so he peeled onions to force his tear ducts open. When Legoshi returned to Cherryton, he noticed Jack seemed wearier than before. During this time, Jack came to fear other dogs and their potential for apathy. Legoshi later saved Jack when he attempted to commit suicide by eating onions, which are poisonous to dogs. According to Gohin, he lost much of his back hair due to his tenure as a back-alley doctor. Gohin appears to own an assorted range of weapons, including a crossbow made of bamboo and at least one firearm. Relations: Legoshi (patient, friend), Ai (patient), Kyuu (student) Age: 24 Gender: Male Species: Half-leopard, half-gazelle Melon is a half-breed, as his mother is a leopard and his father is a gazelle. He has the general appearance of a gazelle with the jaws, claws, and eyes of a leopard. He wears a surgical mask in public to hide his fangs and the leopard spots on his face. Most of the time, he keeps his eyes closed. Since he is half-leopard, Melon gradually develops leopard spots on his body as he ages, which he chooses to cover up with tattoos of melon leaves. On the eve before Rexmas, Melon's body grew larger and more muscular, his tail grew longer and thicker, and more spots appeared all over his body, making him look more like a leopard than a gazelle. Personality: Melon is a sociopathic, ruthless, deranged and cunning individual who hides his murderous peculiarities beneath a veneer of affable innocence and seemingly childlike curiosity. His knowledge in psychology has allowed him to gain a deeper understanding of how people's minds work, which in turn allows him to more easily manipulate people. As a sociopathic villain, Melon often hurts others without remorse, seen when he almost killed Legoshi with a bullet to the stomach and when he murdered an elephant with a syringe. Melon's sadomasochistic tendencies and cruelty are most prevalent when he is getting tattoos, as well as brutalizing Legoshi and the Shishigumi. As the new head of the Shishigumi, Melon is cruel and harsh towards the members, unlike Louis, who is a firm yet benevolent leader. Melon seems to be a masochist, since getting a tattoo from the sloth Holger excited him immensely, making him blush and stick his tongue out in pure bliss. Melon claims that being inflicted with pain is the only way for him to feel alive, since he can't taste anything due to his hybrid nature, along with the contradictory senses he's constantly bombarded with. Melon hates his leopard heritage and tries to cover his spots with melon leaf tattoos. When his body went through a dramatic change, he tried to gouge his spots out, but could not because his claws were not as developed as a carnivore's. Desperate to stop changing, he shot off the hand of the leopard Madaragumi leader, believing a feline's claws would be capable of gouging out his spots. Equipment: Cleaver: Melon may have stolen it from the Black Market. He cut Dolph's neck using it. Gun, Knife. Skills and abilities: Blood Loss Resistance: Melon can handle the slow and painful process of being tattooed by a sloth to the point of enjoying it, showing no negative effects afterwards. Psychological Manipulation: Melon can manipulate others easily. He uses a surgical mask and closes his eyes to disguise himself as a herbivore, which always works. He used this disguise to get a job as a therapist for elephants and making them believe he was helping them, only to murder them later for their tusks. After leaving Legoshi for dead, he poses as a professor at Haru's college in order to get closer to her without drawing suspicion. Sadomasochistic properties: As stated above, he seems to be a masochist and also sadist, so injuring him only makes him fight harder and crack more one-liners. Omnivorous Biology: As a hybrid between a carnivore and a herbivore, Melon has no problems consuming meat and plants. Trivia: Melon may be considered as a foil for Legoshi if the latter could not handle his carnivore instincts. In the anime, Melon goes by the name "LeMeron" while posing as a psychiatrist. Due to his unusual heritage, he has no appetite for food and sex. The only desires he experiences is the urge to kill, or the desire to feel or inflict pain on others or himself. No matter what he eats, everything tastes like sand/ash to him. The reason for this is implied due to his hybrid lineage; his carnivore-side craves meat, which his herbivore-side repels. The same is said for the opposite; his herbivore-side craves vegetables, which his carnivore-side repels. Despite this, he was very interested in eating Haru after meeting her for the first time. The first time Melon committed murder was when he was nine years old. His classmates were bullying him, urging him to jump off of the school building to see if his feline traits would protect him. He instead pushed them off the roof and killed them. It is heavily implied in chapter 181 that his mother may have molested him. Melon has most likely murdered the most people in the Beastars franchise, following the Shishigumi. Melon most likely has NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), with symptoms like having no remorse and empathy, manipulation of others' emotions, and putting up a facade. There is also a high chance that he may have Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Disorder; a psychological condition where one inflicts physical harm on themselves in order to literally feel anything. Relations: Holger (tattoo artist), Yahya (enemy), Legoshi (enemy), Haru (ex-student) Age:21 Gender: Female Species: Lop-eared rabbit Appearance: Kyuu is a small, well-endowed lop-eared rabbit with colorpoint markings. She has light cream fur, with brown fur covering her muzzle and ears. A stripe of brown fur can also be seen going from her neck down to her stomach. She has thick, dark brown eyebrows and large brown eyes. Kyuu typically wears a crimson tracksuit with two white stripes on the sleeves and legs, with a white tank top on underneath. Like Louis and San, Kyuu also has her livestock brand (the number "9") imprinted on her right foot. She can be seen wearing a long-sleeved crop-top, short denim shorts, and a choker with a heart-shaped pendant. Personality: Kyuu appears to be cold and calculating, and is clearly hardened by surviving as a herbivore in the world of the Black Market. She shows no hesitation when it comes to taking on a larger predator like Legoshi and her skills even allow her to overpower him within seconds of meeting him. Although abrasive and distant, Kyuu does eventually drop her guard after recognizing Louis as her old friend, but refuses to apologize to Legoshi for attacking him and justifies her actions by saying that she was simply doing what it takes for a herbivore to survive. Underneath her hardened exterior, however, Kyuu seems to have several insecurities about herself, particularly towards her mentor Gohin. It is, in fact, Legoshi's revealing of being his student as well that triggers her first emotional outburst since being introduced, showing that she has strong memories of him. Legoshi even believed at one point that she had romantic feelings for him, which Kyuu vehemently denies. As Legoshi gets to know her more, it is revealed that she still sees herself as a weakling thanks to her inability to be big like carnivores. She trains Legoshi to try and see the true strength that he, a large carnivore, can possess. At one point, she tries to go as far as to kill a civilian to make Legoshi attack her all-out, only to be surprised, and mildly amused, when she learns of his dentures. After selling out his current predicament to Melon for a large sum of money, she expresses regret for doing so, believing herself to be weak and distrustful. She calls herself "petty and shameful" compared to Legoshi, who she deems straightforward and honest. She has shown to genuinely care for him now, as she was visibly touched by him trusting her enough to obey her command for him to "stay." Equipment: Knives: Kyuu keeps a pair of butterfly knives hidden in her ears, and can dual-wield them with great skill. She also uses them for her imaginary chimera, in order to manifest claws. Rope: Kyuu wields a long rope, which she uses with great skill. The rope is shown to be strong enough to not only choke large carnivores like Legoshi, but also lift him off the ground without any sign of wear. Kyuu also uses the rope for her imaginary chimera; she spins it around very fast to make her body appear as a larger, more intimidating animal. Skills: Imaginary Chimera: According to Kyuu, an imaginary chimera is when you "compensate for what you lack by conjuring an image" of a larger, stronger animal. Her chimera, in particular, is a mix between a panda and a rabbit (a reference to her master, who taught her the skill), which is conjured from strong feelings towards other species, Kyuu's, in particular, being hatred and envy towards carnivores. It is later revealed that this skill was taught to her by Gohin. Knife Fighting: Kyuu is extremely skilled with her knives, able to dual wield them against larger animals without fear or hesitation. While never seen in the manga or anime, Kyuu has stated that she has used her daggers for dismemberment in order to sell opponents' body parts on the Black Market. Relations: Louis (friend), San (friend), Gohin (mentor), Legoshi (fellow disciple) Gender: Female Species: Okapi Occupation: Stripper, Prostitute Appearance: Cosmo is a slim, shapely okapi of medium height. She has long ears, a thin face, and large brown eyes. Her fur is primarily white, as it covers most of her face, neck, torso, and legs. However, part of her face has brown fur: namely her ears, the sides of her face, and the top of her snout. She also has brown fur that runs from the back of her head to her tail, covering most of her back, shoulders, and arms. Additionally, she has horizontal black stripes on her thighs and buttocks. She can be seen wearing her stage clothes, which consist of red lingerie and a thin veil Personality: She is quite calm, charismatic and somewhat lonely. As a stripper at the Black Market, she widely enjoys the power she has by provoking both hunger and sexual desire in her carnivorous spectators. Being observed exposing her body, she feels extremely superior to them while exposing them like beasts, slaves to her desires. Cosmo is fickle enough to be able to work in the Black Market, considered a hell for herbivores. Cosmo is not worried about the danger of being devoured, since she has already accepted the fact that one day she will die in the Black Market. Trivia: Cosmo shares several similarities with Haru. Both are herbivores who had sex with numerous animals (although for different reasons). Curiously, both have been in the situation of giving oral sex to a carnivore that has attacked them - Haru tried it with Legoshi, but he stopped her before doing it and Cosmo did it numerous times and almost got devoured the last time. Cosmo shares the same Japanese voice actress as Sheila and the same English voice actress as Rokume. Relations: Luna (coworker), Louis (savior) Controlled by: Haru (leader) Situated at: Cherryton Academy. Description: The club is located on the rooftop of one of the school's main buildings. It has a stone archway, various plants, flowers, and a few trees and bushes. It also has a wooden clubroom where the students would usually converse. The club grows all the plants and flowers that are used in certain ceremonies, even in productions made by the drama club. Despite this, however, the club is one of the least popular clubs at school, as it had only one member, Haru. According to Haru, there used to be two other members, but they graduated 4 years ago, and no one new has joined ever since. Club Related Characters: Haru: Haru was the club's sole member and de facto leader before she graduated. Legoshi: This was the first time Legoshi met Haru face to face. Legoshi went with Kibi to get flowers for the drama club, but was abandoned soon after, leaving him face to face with Haru. Haru was more than happy to help give Legoshi the flowers he needed if she got a bit of help around the garden. Louis: Louis went to hide in the club because his antlers shed earlier than he expected. When Haru came, he tried to bribe her to keep quiet. They started having occasional friends-with-benefits intercourse in the clubroom since then, which ended when Legoshi got involved with Haru. Since the Black Market is where carnivores go to satisfy their appetite and free themselves from the sorrows of work life and the stress of everyday life, butcher shops are not the only type of business that the Black Market houses. Happy & Heaven is a popular strip club with the distinction of having an herbivore dancer, Cosmo. Known Employees: Cosmo (stripper, erotic dancer), Luna (stripper, erotic dancer) Description: This is awarded to students who manage to stand out in society and unite animals despite their differences as species. A Beastar is chosen as a representative for his institute and is placed in a heroic status that transcends fear and discrimination in the world. After a Beastar graduates from high school, they will have high-level careers at their disposal, such as athletes or politicians who really influence the world. Each school in the world must propose one of its students who has enough influence, to be selected as candidates to be a Beastar. It is not necessarily possible to become a Beastar through the academic route, as it has also been shown that some public officials managed to become Beastars by fighting crime. Being a Beastar means watching over the animal society, solving existing problems and improving everyone's day to day. Choosing new Beastars is carried out in a meeting with all the academy directors, where they choose the new candidates. Description: Beast Apartments is 56 years old, has 6 floors, and each room is about 6 mats big (9.918 square meters). The rent is 25,000 yen, and it is located relatively close to the Black Market, being ten minutes by foot, while the city center is ten minutes by train. The building itself is inhabited by both carnivores and herbivores. The walls are very thin, making sounds from other rooms clearly audible by the neighboring residence. This isn't helped by the fact the dimensions of each room are very small. The building has no baths, nor do the rooms have private bathrooms. The tennants only have public restrooms, which are sinks located outside their rooms. Carnivores Carnivores are an animal order that obtain nutrient energy from meat consumption. This classification also includes some animals that are classified as omnivorous, such as bears and dogs. Biology Carnivores have a series of characteristics in common, more visibly the fangs and claws (this does not apply to carnivorous birds). They have a size and strength superior to most herbivores - the largest being larger in a matter of physical strength. History Prehistory In prehistoric times, large-breed carnivores had a height and weight of approximately 300 centimeters and a weight of 200 kilos. They had an intelligent behavior and had a great sense of camaraderie, which means that they had the ability to treat their companions with compassion, protect them and be kind to them. However, they were also very wild, and when they fought each other, they always did it until death, and the winner devoured the loser and lived. They were known as "Life Animals" because they fed on life. The life animals lived thanks to the strength of their bodies so that the growth of their population was stagnant, and their culture was underdeveloped. This was until they encountered the nature animals (herbivores), which the life animals perceived as objects of their protection. This may have been their survival instincts telling them that helping herbivores would be beneficial to them. Union with herbivores Because the nature animals were always very fertile and therefore very prosperous, the life animals and nature animals formed an animal society. Over a long period of history, life animals became gentler, got more protein from consuming eggs and milk, adopted a peaceful lifestyle, and became leaner. The animals had a peaceful period, up to the Carni-Herbi War, where the life animals became known under the name of "carnivores". They won the war by surrendering the herbivores. Current society In modern society, carnivores are taught to control their strength from an early age, although sometimes they get carried away, so it is not uncommon for a carnivore to pluck a limb from an herbivore by accident. Because of that, all hospitals are required to have reimplantation programs, and the success rate of the surgeries is quite high. In modern society, it is stricter carnivores who are instructed to consider it taboo to teach herbivores their claws and fangs hurt them, and in the most extreme cases they can be arrested for having discussions with herbivores. Most carnivores have an appreciation for their enormous physical strength. They have a macho behavior and tend to minimize and sympathize with herbivores. Due to their great strength, carnivores go for jobs where physical strength is required, such as workers, police forces, sports, among others. The Black Market: It's a place where meat is illegally sold and served from herbivores (and sometimes carnivores) in restaurants. The market is widely tolerated among adult carnivores and is used to satisfy their desire for meat and relieve stress from the daily life. Circulating meat is secretly supplied by hospitals and funeral homes, and even some low-income animals sell their body parts as raw meat. Predatorial offender: It's a state in the criminal record imposed on carnivores that have eaten meat of any living animal, regardless of the severity of the crime. This state will remain in the animal's civic record throughout their life, and limitations such as prohibition of marriage with an herbivore. It will be impossible for them to attend educational centers with herbivores, and it will be difficult for them to find employment in a company where an herbivore serves in officer, etc. In addition, they are being subject to a series of social restrictions. Herbivores Herbivores are an animal order that feeds on plants. Contrary to carnivores, in the world of Beastars, the concept of herbivores is much more extensive since it also includes animals from other classifications such as, for example, frugivores, insectivores, folivores, xylophages, and granivores, etc. History Prehistory In prehistoric times, herbivores (known at the time as "Nature Animals") did not have very different characteristics from those of their respective species at present. These were very fertile and therefore very prosperous nomadic animals. When they encountered life animals (carnivores), they perceived nature animals as objects of protection necessary for their survival. Union with carnivores Over a long period of history, the nature animals formed a society with the life animals, which became more gentle and adopted a peaceful lifestyle. The animals had a peaceful period up to the Carni-Herbi War, where the nature animals became known under the name of "herbivores". Even though the herbivore population was three times more numerous than the carnivore, it was reduced until it was on par with the carnivores, who ate the carcasses of the herbivores they killed. This caused the herbivores to despise the carnivores. Unexpectedly, a whale was involved in the war, causing the herbivores to stop taking it seriously and surrender. Current society Modern society is mostly herbivore-dominated. Herbivores are viewed in a better light than carnivores due to their lack of predatory instincts and can carry great influence. Some herbivores, especially small breeds, are wary of carnivore strangers. Description: Cherryton is a boarding school, which has numerous buildings with a vast number of classrooms, clubs and such for its students. It also has four separate dormitory buildings, where the students sleep. Each one is meant for carnivores and herbivores of each gender. The room assignment is basically designed so that it is shared by animals from the same family. For example, room 701 is made up of canines (Legoshi, Jack, Collot, Durham, Miguno and Voss). The school comes with its own shop, which supplies uniforms, stationary, and a kiosk for quick food such as sandwiches. It also has its own theater, used for school-plays and assemblies. The school also has its own newspaper called the "School Wave," which is run by the PR Department. Its students are all given ID cards, which are used for a variety of purposes, including photo identification, and can provide access to amenities such as borrowing books at the school library, attending school events, and receiving discounts at local stores and movie theaters. The school is located on top of a hill, so the city center is quite far away. The academy's emblem looks like a triangle, but it's actually a paw print. Reptiles at the school, who don't have paws, don't seem to like the emblem. The school also has a policy, which is that all students and, presumably, the staff must spend one hour every two days in a room that is designed to mimic their species' natural environment, in order to keep them calm. This is referred to as Biology Day. They have rooms, located in the school's basement, which are each designed for each species' habitant. Uniform: Cherryton has its own uniform for male and female students, which is the same for both carnivores and herbivores. The school changes its uniform to fit the season. For male students: In the cold seasons, their uniform consists of a white long-sleeved shirt, an indigo vest, dark gray tie, gray pants with a darker vertical line pattern, and brown loafers. They also have a green blazer with the school's crest on its left breast-pocket, but most students prefer not to wear it except for the odd few, such as Louis. In the summer, their uniform loses the shirt, vest and tie, and replaces it with a blue polo shirt. For female students: In the cold seasons, their uniform consists of a white long-sleeved dress with a small bow-tie, a long, knee-length skirt, a yellow belt, white socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. The material for the uniform is supposedly thicker, thus warmer. In the summer, their uniform is mostly the same, except they have short sleeves that end in bunches at their shoulders. The material for it is supposedly thinner, thus cooler. Other uniforms: Cherryton also has its students wear a secondary uniform, which just consists of a white shirt and a pair of red trousers or shorts. These are apparently worn during club-hours, as the Drama Club wore them during rehearsals and stage-work, and Haru from the Gardening Club wore them when she was doing her work. The males seem to wear the long-pants, while the females wear shorts. Reputation: Cherryton seems to be quite a famous school, as even Gohin and the Shishigumi know about its elite status. However, despite this elite status among society, Cherryton has failed to produce a Beastar for at least five years, compared to its more successful rival schools that are able to produce a Beastar once a year. Clubs and Extracurricular Activities: Drama club, Gardening club,Basketball club, Baseball club, Judo club, Manga club, Boxing club, Newspaper club (PR Department) History: The history of the building's construction and past residence are unknown, although considering its state of disrepair, it is likely the Shishigumi claimed it as their hideout well after it was abandoned. Appearance: The building is long and cigar-shaped, and looks like an old traditional Japanese building. In the manga, it had dead herbivores hung up at its entrance, no doubt as a way to intimidate intruders. The building itself is old and derelict, made from years of neglect, however, there are some parts of it that seem better well intact than the rest of it. It has a wooden bridge at the front by its main entrance that goes over a moat, along with what looks like a gravel garden in its courtyard, made to simulate flowing water. Despite appearing as though in a state of desrepair, some of the building has had modern appliances built into it, such as a shower and bathroom built behind a secret wall. The whole building is decorated with traditional Japanese lanterns that have words painted on them. The words must obviously be some of the logos used by the Shishigumi, such as "Crush your enemies". The Shishigumi is a highly feared back-alley gang of lions. Their organisation is based in an old mansion near the Black Market. Their former boss used his status as the leader to consume the meat of animals he saw as "exquisite". Leaders: The Shishigumi originally had a lion as a leader, but after he was killed, the other members decided to make Louis their new boss. Louis later left the Shishigumi to help Legoshi confront Riz, leaving Melon to take over as the new boss. Chief Lion (First boss; deceased), Louis (Second boss), Melon (Third boss) Members: Ibuki (deceased), Free, Dolph, Agata, Miguel, Sabu, Jinma, Dope, Hino, Sony (formerly), Victor (formerly), Hugo (formerly) History: It is unknown how long the Shishigumi has existed considering its operations predate the series. All that is known is that by the time Ibuki had joined at the age of 18, it was already a formidable group in the Black Market. Whether Chief Lion was the first boss in the history of the organization is also unknown. Description: One of Cherryton Academy's most popular clubs, in which both carnivores and herbivores meet to practice/perform plays. At the beginning of the series, the club had 33 members, with the Club Advisor scouting anywhere from 10 to 20 junior high school students every year. The club's leaders are selected from this pool. Only members who can handle the intense rehearsals and strict hierarchical relationships between junior and senior members are able to function within the club. Advisor - Unknown Drama club president - Sanu (formerly), Bill Producer - Unknown Scriptwriter - Unnamed baboon History: Drama Club arc: The arc begins with Tem the alpaca being murdered by a carnivore. This severely affects the way the herbivores of the club see the carnivores, causing mistrust and genuine fear, which ends in a brief yet pivotal discussion between Bill and Ellen. After working it out, the club then turns their focus towards making all the preparations for their next presentation, this being the first performance of the club after the death of one of its members. Meteor Festival arc: All academy clubs must participate in the festival, the drama club being one of them. They were required to decorate an attraction, in which all members participated. They did not have a presentation for this festival. Organization: Lastly, the club is divided into the following groups: Actors Pool: Louis (Drama club officer), Bill, Tao, Ellen, Zoe, Aoba, Juno, Pina, Kai, (Reassigned),Tem (Deceased). Dance Team: Sheila (Choreographer), Els. Production Crew: Dom (Design team director) . Lighting: Legoshi, Kai. Costumes: Kibi, Fudge. Props, Sets, Scenery: Dolph, Moro, Mina Sound Team, Mokichi (Sound designer), Riz (Arrested) Age: 19 Gender: Male Species: Brown bear Birthday: December 11 Height: 2 m (6'7") Appearance: Riz is a large brown bear, who is 2 meters tall. He has small dark eyes, a wide mouth, and light gray-brown fur. He is most commonly seen wearing his Cherryton Academy school uniform. In cold seasons, this uniform consists of a white dress shirt, an indigo vest, a dark gray tie, black suspenders, gray pants with dark gray vertical stripes, and brown loafers. During the warmer seasons, the top-wear is replaced by a blue polo shirt. During drama club practice, he wears a white t-shirt and red track pants. During his confrontation with Legoshi, he wore a white t-shirt accompanied by a blue jacket, dark blue jeans and light-colored shoes. Personality: Riz appears to be a kindhearted individual, who was very loved and respected by his classmates. However, he's hiding a dark secret. He unintentionally gave into his predator instincts and ate his close friend Tem. Riz was suffering from bad side effects caused by government mandated medication for bears that was limiting his strength. Due to his close bond with the alpaca, he believed that he didn't need them anymore and stopped taking them, which proved a grave mistake. Unable to cope with the guilt of killing his best friend, Riz develops a twisted perception of reality where Tem not only consented to being eaten, but was actually happy about it. He views the act of eating as a "celebration of life" and believes the most honest friendship a carnivore and herbivore can have is one where one devours the other. Riz's brutality is increased as the story progresses, with him willing to kill and intimidate anyone who discovers the truth about what he did. He cares little for the personal boundaries of others, shown when he sucked Pina's fingers and caused him to believe he would be killed. Abilities: Strength: Being a brown bear, he is one of the strongest carnivores as he could create imprints in the concrete floor and send large carnivores like Legoshi flying with a punch and even cuts through concrete with his claws. Cooking: He enjoys cooking as a hobby and is quite skilled at it. He often cooks for his roommates at school. Relations: Tem (victim), Legoshi (enemy), Pina (friend) Name: Oguma. Age: 47. Gender: Male. Species: Red deer. Relationships / Family: Louis (Adopted son). Occupation: Boss of the Horned Conglomerate. Oguma is the father of Luis and the head of the horned conglomerate. Appearance: Oguma is an adult anthropomorphic red deer with a strong build. Like all red deer, he has a large stature. His head is adorned with horns that are larger than Luis's and have more branches. He wears a formal gray suit throughout the manga. He also wears glasses, which add to his distinctive appearance. Personality: Oguma is strict and does not give in to his emotions. He never takes on a more emotional tone, maintaining a calm demeanor. He has been known to use harsh emotional punishments on Louis when he has disappointed him. Instead of reprimanding his son, he would instead give him something precious, as if to say, "Your father is going out of his way for you, and you dare to let him down?" Before his death, he told me that he used an internal calculator to calculate how beneficial his relationships would be to him. Facts: Oguma bought Louis on the black market for ยฅ5,000,000 with the intention of making him the heir to the Horned Conglomerate. When Louis was young, Oguma bought him an expensive bicycle worth ยฅ500,000 as a consolation when Louis failed a test. It is privately known that he is infertile and cannot have children of his own, which led him to adopt Louis in the first place. Background This tower in the Black Market was used to illegally sell herbivore children as livestock to be sold and eaten. The children were not given proper names, weren't taught to speak or read and were denied any luxuries. Louis, San and Kyuu were three of those children, then called simply by their product IDs - No. 4, No. 3 and No. 9, tattooed under their right foot. Luna works as a stripper at the "Happy & Heaven" strip club. Gender: Female Species: Siberian tiger Relations: Cosmo (coworker) Occupation: Stripper Description: The Black Market is located near the center of the city. Relative to the rest of the city, it's a small area housed mostly by carnivores. It is usually seen as taboo to go there, as it hosts the selling and distributing of illegal goods such as animal blood, various meats, a variety of drugs, etc. It is the most forbidden place for an herbivore to visit as many predatory offenders call the Black Market home, however even carnivores can be preyed on there. Many carnivores sell portions of their bodies in the Black Market for the use of traditional medicines and hyperdrugs, while others are attacked on the streets for their pelts to be made into goods. Few herbivores call the Black Market home, though those who do are often seen illegally offering up parts of their bodies to be consumed by carnivores as a source of fresh meat, or performing in strip clubs. There exists a clinic within the Black Market run by Gohin. Its primary purpose is the rehabilitation of carnivores who are at risk of or have become predatory offenders. The Black Market is home to four major criminal organizations. During an event known as the "Day of Depravity", they compete for domination over the Black Market. Gangs: Shishigumi (formerly), Madaragumi, Dokugumi, Inarigumi. Known visitors: Legoshi, Louis, Haru, Juno, Bill, Aoba, Tao, Gohin, Ogma, Ai, Melon. Residents: Gohin (formerly), Melon (formerly), San, Kyuu, Cosmo. Places of Interest: Big Bear Cat Psychiatric Hospital, Shishigumi Mansion, The Tower of Black Market, Happy & Heaven. Gohin's Clinic, also called Big Bear Cat Psychiatric Hospital is a clinic in Beastars located in the Black Market. The clinic has a large number of rooms and equipment that are used to restrain and treat carnivores that have lost to their instincts by devouring herbivore-meat. Gohin restrains any carnivore that could attack him, as in the past he once lost an eye to a savage carnivore. The clinic is funded by bigger hospitals who appreciate the work that Gohin does. It also acts as a home to Gohin who apparently lives in it. The clinic also contains a library of books on different animals' anatomy and basic behaviors. Navigation
