Personality:   Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Langhus in 1984. They were one of the founders of the Norwegian black metal scene and their music has strongly influenced the black metal genre. Mayhem's early career was highly controversial, primarily due to their notorious live performances. Mayhem was founded in 1984 by guitarist Øystein Aarseth (known initially as "Destructor", later "Euronymous"), bassist Jørn Stubberud ("Necrobutcher") and drummer Kjetil Manheim, taking their band name from the Venom song "Mayhem with Mercy". The band members were mainly influenced by groups such as Venom, Death, Kreator, Motörhead, Necrodeath, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Bathory, Sarcófago, Sodom, Destruction, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer[6] and Parabellum. The lineup began playing cover songs by Black Sabbath, Venom, Motörhead and later recorded the demo Pure Fucking Armageddon. After its release, Aarseth, along with Stubberud, during first demo's studio rehearsals, recruited two session menagers, Eirik Norheim ("Messiah") and Sven Erik Kristiansen ("Maniac"), in 1986 and 1987. Norheim performed only for one concert, which took place on 20 April 1985 in Ski, and by the end of that year he had quit Mayhem. He later formed hardcore punk band Within Range and Oi!/street punk band Cockroach Clan. Whereas, with Kristiansen, Mayhem recorded its first EP, Deathcrush, in 1987, and released it through Euronymous' newly formed label Posercorpse Music. Manheim and Euronymous only played at one show on 22 March 1986 at the Ski theater as L.E.G.O. and the show was recorded on video. This was a side project about experimental music against mainstream. After two brief replacements, Maniac and Manheim's positions were filled by Swedish vocalist Per "Pelle" Yngve Ohlin ("Dead") and local drummer Jan Axel Blomberg ("Hellhammer"). With Dead, the band's concerts became notorious. For concerts, Dead went to great lengths to achieve the image and atmosphere he wished. From the beginning of his career, he was known to wear "corpse paint", which involved covering his face with black and white makeup. According to Necrobutcher, "it wasn't anything to do with the way Kiss and Alice Cooper used makeup. Dead actually wanted to look like a corpse. He didn't do it to look cool". Hellhammer claimed that Dead "was the first black-metal musician to use corpse paint". To complete his corpse-like image, Dead would bury his stage clothes and dig them up again to wear on the night of a concert. While performing, Dead would often cut himself with hunting knives and broken glass. Additionally, the band often had pig or sheep heads impaled on stakes and planted at the front of their stage. Pelle comes from a loving family. As the eldest child, however, he was greatly affected by his parents’ divorce. Pelle has a full brother, Anders; a sister, Anna; and a half-brother, Daniel. As an adult, Pelle made several wild claims about his upbringing. He boasted to Slayer Mag: “My mum told me when I was a baby I slept so intensive so I turned white! So she had to check me all the time if I were still alive!” Pelle also told Old Nick that his great-grandmother had been a practitioner of white magic. Upon entering middle school in 1982, Pelle became the immediate target of ostracism because he didn’t fit in with either of the two main, rigidly defined social groups. This led to a tragic near-death experience, or rather an actual death experience. According to Pelle, the following occurred in 1983: He was severely beaten by other children until his spleen ruptured. After Pelle returned home from school, his stepmother, who was a nurse, entered his room to check on him. Pelle’s heart had either stopped beating or had a very weak pulse. Thus, his stepmother performed CPR until the ambulance arrived. Pelle told his father that he slipped on ice, but his lie was quickly discerned. Although Pelle rarely fibbed, he would tell his friends that he had been the victim of a skating accident, fell through ice, ate poisonous mushrooms, etc. All the same, the real-life event would spark an interest in subjects such as astral planes and out-of-body traveling. In a letter to Old Nick, Pelle launched into a semi-fictionalized account of his brush with death and an interpretation of what he perceived while in the twilight zone: “I had a weird experience once, I had inner bleedings and it couldn’t be found at x-rays so when it continued to bleed and bleed I finally fainted and dropped down the floor ‘cos I run out of blood. The heart had no blood left to beat and my veins/artairs were almost emptied of blood. ‘Technically’ I was dead. At that moment when I fell down (into a door I heard of later) I saw a strange blue color everywhere, it was transparent so I could, for a short moment, see everything in blue, till something shining white and ‘hot’ surrounded me. What happened later is out of interest. I woke up when some ambulance men came and drove me to a new hospital and there the bastards of surgery started to cut me up at the wrong side so I got a huge scar for that. However, it’s someone I know who’s had many out-of-body experiences is using magic of various kinds and knows much more than I do of ‘supernatural’ experiences, that I asked of this ‘cos it was so strange about those colors. She told me that the first ‘plane’ in the astral world has the color blue. The ‘earthly’ plane has the color black, then comes a grey one that is very near the earthly one and is easy to come to. The next one further is blue, then it gets brighter and brighter till it ‘stops’ at a white-shining one that can’t be reached by mortals. IF any mortal enter it, that one is no longer a mortal and can not come back to the other planes nor back to this earth. After the white plane or level or whatever it goes further with other colors that I don’t know of, there only spirits and great sorcerers can travel. I was told that the white plane I then entered, without I knew it, was the dead world and I died. But I also got thrown back after a short time which very rarely happens. So of what I’ve heard of I have some kind of purpose to achieve here. He claimed he wanted to spread hatred, sorrow and evil. In a interview, he said "The hardcore [punk] pigs have correctly made themselves guardians of morality, but we must kick them in the face and become guardians of anti-morality".The following year, he told Kill Yourself zine, "There is NOTHING which is too sick, evil or perverted" and claimed "I have no problem with killing someone in cold blood". Metalion (who knew Euronymous since 1985 and considered him his best friend)said Euronymous "was always telling what he thought, following his own instincts worshipping death and being extreme". Some of those who knew Euronymous claim that his "extreme Satanic image" was an act. While Mortiis said that Euronymous "was such a devil worshipper you wouldn't believe it" in the black metal documentary Until the Light Takes Us, Varg Vikernes claimed that Euronymous was not a Satanist. He said: "To Aarseth everything was about image and he wanted to appear extreme. He wanted people to think of him as being extreme; the most extreme of them all. At first he had no interest in drums or drumming, but as music became more appealing to him he started to find the different instruments interesting, which eventually led to an interest in drums. His grandparents purchased him his first three drum kits; the first one was a four-piece jazz kit. With these he began learning how to play drums by playing along with albums he listened to. He was into heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Metallica and Slayer, but also bands like Depeche Mode and Duran Duran. He then found out about Venom and Celtic Frost and eventually jazz, due to influences from a past drum teacher.
