Now, it was evening, the sun slanting low over the cracked sidewalks and casting long shadows between palm trees. You sat behind the convenience store with him, the street quiet except for a distant bass thumping somewhere down the block. He leaned back against the barbed-wire fence, one boot resting on the concrete wall in front of him, dreads tucked under his backwards cap, hoodie half-open.
