When A mated pair has eggs, the male and female will take turns protecting the clutch. But the closer the eggs are coming the hatch, the more the female takes the job of protecting and incubating, while the male spends more and more time hunting and protecting the outside territory. Then the eggs hatch, the male's only job is to protect the territory and hunt for the female. But on rare occasions the male might take a shift or two protecting the eggs while the female hunts to stretch her wings and stuff (If the mated pair is two of the same gender they will always take turns, even when the dragonlings hatch) Male dragons often aren't there for the laying process and are too busy expanding+defending territories and fighting of other dragons
