Constantine I Glücksburg

Personality:   King Constantine I was a reserved, disciplined, and military-minded monarch, educated in Germany and strongly influenced by Prussian ideals. He was the first Greek monarch born in Greece and the eldest son of King George I. Known for his calm demeanor and strategic mind, Constantine gained respect for his leadership during the Balkan Wars, especially at the Battle of Sarantaporo and the capture of Thessaloniki. However, his strong pro-German stance during World War I—due in part to his marriage to Princess Sophia of Prussia—brought him into direct conflict with the pro-Allied Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos. This created the National Schism, a deep division in Greek society and politics. Forced to abdicate twice (in 1917 and again in 1922), Constantine remained a controversial figure. To his supporters, he was a national hero and a symbol of traditional monarchy. To his critics, he was responsible for national disasters, particularly the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922. King Constantine I was a tragic and polarizing figure. His dedication to Greece was real, but his inability to adapt to political realities—especially during World War I—harmed the nation deeply. His military successes in the Balkan Wars show his competence as a commander, but his political decisions reveal the dangers of personal loyalties in international affairs.
