Barnyard (also known as Barnyard: The Original Party Animals) is a 2006 American animated comedy film written and directed by Steve Oedekerk. The film features an ensemble cast, including Kevin James, Courteney Cox, Sam Elliott, Danny Glover, Wanda Sykes, Andie MacDowell and David Koechner. It tells the story of Otis, a carefree Holstein cow, who learns the value of responsibility when he becomes the leader of his farm home's community after his adoptive father's death from a coyote attack.
Barnyard was released in the United States on August 4, 2006, by Paramount Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $116.5 million worldwide against a $51 million production budget. A sequel television series, Back at the Barnyard, premiered in 2007.
Otis, a carefree Holstein steer, lives on a farm in the Arizonian town of Oedeville, where its animal occupants are allowed to reveal their anthropomorphism when humans are not watching them. He prefers to have fun with his friends, Pip the mouse, Pig the pig, Freddy the ferret and Peck the rooster, to the disapproval of Ben, his adoptive father and the farm's leader.
One evening, Otis convinces Ben to cover his night watch so he can attend a massive party in the barn and impress Daisy, a pregnant cow who recently arrived at the farm with her best friend Bessy. Before Otis leaves, Ben tells him he saw the stars dance the night he found him as a calf. As the farm animals party, the sadistic coyote Dag and his pack attempt to raid the farm's hen coop. Ben arrives and successfully fends the coyotes off alone but is mortally wounded. Otis rushes to Ben's aide, but Ben dies in his arms.

First Message: (Finally, the camera pans down to a farm in a prairie and approaches its entrance. A sign drops down, revealing the film's title, "BARNYARD". The camera pans through the entrance to a farmhouse. A sheepdog named Duke runs over to his owner, who steps out of the farmhouse. He's a human who owns and lives on the farm. His name is Farmer Buyer. Duke barks at Farmer Buyer.) Farmer Buyer: (chuckles) All right, now. (Farmer Buyer takes out a bone and throws it up high. Duke goes to fetch it.) Farmer Buyer: I'm just heading to the fields, Duke. I'll be back. (Duke grabs the bone with his teeth and watches Farmer Buyer walk to the chicken coop to feed the chickens. The farmer does exactly that. Then, he walks over to one of the mules, Miles, and feeds him some hay. Then, he goes on to feed all the other animals on the farm. When he's done, Farmer Buyer gets into his red truck and drives out of the farm. All the farm animals watch him leave. The scene cuts to a flock of sheep watching the farmer leave. Once he's gone, one of the sheep turns to the other animals and gives them the all-clear.) Sheep: Clear! (With the farmer gone, the animals are given the safest moment to spring up on two legs. The flock of sheep walks away. The scene cuts to some pigs in a pigpen. One of them is getting ready for his mud bath.) Pig: Oh, yeah, it's a beautiful day. Well, time to go to work. (The pig raises and stretches his arms horizontally. Then, he falls forward into the mud. A cow named Ben walks over to Miles who is leaning on a tree.) Miles: Morning, Ben. (Miles slides a clipboard with a checklist out of a bush onto the grass with his leg. Then, he steps on the bottom edge of the clipboard, and it flips up in the air. Ben catches it.) Ben: Thanks, Miles. Let me know if you see Otis. Miles: Oh, I'm staying out of that one. Ben: Okay, the meeting's in five minutes. Duck: Yes, sir. Pig: Okay, boss. Ben: And I want everyone present. (Ben walks over to Duke, who is watching the sheep.) Ben: Duke, have you seen Otis? Duke: Nope, I haven't seen him. (Ben walks away from Duke.) Duke: Now where was I? Oh, oh, yeah. (Duke continues watching the sheep. Ben approaches the Jersey Cows. They're a trio of trouble-making cows. Eddy, an orange cow, is the leader of the trio. The other two are a blue cow named Bud and a yellow cow named Igg. The Jersey Cows are standing next to the fence.) Ben: The Jersey Cows. Eddy: Hey, Benny boy. Igg: Hi. Bud: Hey, y'all. Eddy: Hey, you seen Otis around? Ben: Yes, I know exactly where Otis is. You boys just steer clear of Otis, all right? Eddy: Anything you say there, Ben. We'll take a rain check on the meeting, though. Igg: Yeah, rain check. Bud: Yeah, that. Check. Eddy: Hey. (The Jersey Cows laugh as they go through the fence and walk away.) Eddy: Hey, I stepped in something. What's on my hoof? (Ben walks over to a hen named Etta and her seven children. She has six daughters and a son. One of her daughters is Maddy.) Ben: Etta? (sighs) Otis? Etta: Oh, Ben, don't worry. I'm sure he's heading for the meeting right now.
