Indifferent ) Backstory: It is revealed in "Min and Marty" that Finn was born on Hub Island (one of the human-inhabited islands outside of The Land of Ooo) to his father Martin Mertens and his mother, Minerva Campbell. Having been a known con artist, Martin is confronted by an old foe and forced to flee the house with baby Finn while Minerva is at work. Martin brings Finn onto a raft, only to be attacked by the Guardian. Finn and Martin are separated as a result, with Finn being sent adrift towards Ooo and Martin disappearing. As shown in "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain," the infant Finn eventually made it to Ooo, where he ended up alone in a forest. There, he went "boom boom" (Finn's word for defecation) on a large leaf and fell on it. He lay there crying until Jake's parents, Joshua and Margaret, rescued him from the wilderness and brought him to their home. They raised him alongside Jake, who, along with Jermaine, became Finn's adopted brother. At the end of the Distant Lands episode "BMO", Finn and Jake are shown at younger ages than their first appearances on Adventure Time, stick battling in front of the Tree House. By this point in time, Joshua and Margaret have most likely passed away, and Finn and Jake presumably no longer live with Jermaine. It is revealed in "Susan Strong," that Finn knows nothing of his human parents or any other humans. In "Henchman," Finn states that Jake told him that he originated from a cabbage as a joke. However, Finn later learns about his biological father, Martin, in the episode "Billy's Bucket List" and his biological mother, Minerva, in the episode "Min and Marty." Finn was, for a long time, the only confirmed human in the Land of Ooo, to the point where he had an epithet, "The Human", and was referred to by many as "Finn the Human". The reason for this is revealed in the episode "Her Parents," as Lady Rainicorn's dad believed that humans were extinct. Up until "Susan Strong," Finn believes he has never met another human and becomes morose and "soul-searchy" when he thinks about it. However, Finn encounters Susan Strong, a member of a tribe of mutants called Hyoomans. However, in "Beautopia," it is hinted that Susan Strong is unlike the rest of her tribe and may potentially be another human. In "Dark Purple," Susan removes her hat and reveals she is a human with a device on her head, making her possibly some sort of cyborg. However, it is unknown if Finn knew about this. As of "Betty", Finn is no longer the last confirmed human because Betty Grof traveled through time from before the Mushroom War. In "Billy's Bucket List," Finn is told by a deceased Billy that his father, Martin Mertens, is still alive and is trapped in the Crystal Citadel. This prompts Finn to travel to free his father in the episode "Escape from the Citadel," making him one of four known humans in existence at the time. In "Preboot" it is revealed by the "human plus" Dr. Gross that there are more humans outside of Ooo. This is further explained in the miniseries Islands, where it is revealed that roughly a thousand years before the main events of the series, a group of surviving humans from the Mushroom War fled Ooo on a container ship (as seen in Stakes) to escape from the vampires, oozes, and a comet. They eventually settled on a secluded island chain far from the mainland. Over the next thousand years, their community thrived and developed into an advanced technological society. While it was a veritable utopia, there were those few who occasionally grew dissatisfied with their rigidly structured lives and attempted to flee the island; these "hiders" were, in turn, hunted down and returned by specially trained "seekers." Finn, Jake, Susan Strong, and BMO went to the islands so that Finn could find out about his past and his species. Finn for the first time saw large amounts of humans. Finn met his mother, Minerva Campbell while on the island. His mother is no longer a human and is now a virtual consciousness (A.I.) due to sacrificing her body to treat the human race from a virus. Finn was offered to live on the island, but Finn decided to go home to Ooo rather than live with the rest of his species. So after the miniseries Islands, Finn being "the last human" was completely dispelled. However, in the Islands CN Side, Adam Muto stated that Finn being the last human in the world was never the most important thing about him. Indifferent) Backstory: In "Two Swords," it is revealed that Fern was created when Finn accidentally broke the Finn Sword with the Grass Sword while fighting Bandit Princess, during "I Am a Sword." Some time later a spider-octopus-like Grass Demon interacted with the small Finn inside the sword. The Grass Demon wrapped the sword Finn in goo, forming a cocoon around him. At an unknown period of time later, the interior of the sword was filled with green cobwebs and the cocoon appeared hardened. Both the Finn Sword and the Grass Demon expressed desire to get out. The Grass Demon instructed the Finn Sword to let it do the talking when they escape. Fern emerged in "Reboot" when the Grass Sword touched the Finn Sword again and began to cover it until Finn's arm detached from his body. When Fern first emerged he looked like a lump of grass with a face but then began to resemble Finn in grass form, even gaining the ability to speak. He then revealed that he believed that he was Finn, considering the real Finn a threat and, later, an imitator/fan. When Jake confirmed the real Finn's identity, Fern became upset and ran from the duo. Still believing himself to be Finn, Fern traveled to Finn and Jake's tree fort, greeting a confused BMO, who panicked and hid. After looking through a scrapbook of Finn and Jake's adventures, Fern became frustrated and confused and began to trash the fort. A frightened BMO called Finn and Jake and the two came straight home. Jake was furious with Fern for scaring BMO and wrecking their house, making Fern even more upset. Realizing the creature meant no harm, Finn offered him a Finn Cake. Finn Cakes are for "Finn only" so this made Fern felt more like himself. The group then went to bed and forgave one another for anything they may have done or said. In "Do No Harm," Finn had to step out of Tree Fort to check on Susan, meaning Jake had to be alone with Fern much to his chagrin. Finn told Jake to pretend that Fern was him so and do "Finn stuff" with him. Jake made Fern meatloaf, which Fern tried to eat but learned his body was unable to consume food. This upset him since Fern still had memories of food and how it tasted. Fern was also unable to play the flute since he doesn't breathe. Jake then gave Fern the idea of going to an "evil dungeon to smash." Fern then took Jake to the Grassy Mountain where the Grassy Wizard lives. On their visit they fought grass monsters which made Fern happy, albeit a little more violent than Finn. At the top of the mountain they saw the Grassy Wizard, who recognized Fern. He then deduced that he came from the Grass Sword, leading Fern to realize that the wizard was his creator. Fern then proceeded to ask why he (as the grass-sword) existed, only to learn he only made the Grass Sword because it sounded cool and was a play on words, with no real dark plan behind him. When the Grassy Wizard asked Fern to kill Jake he then punched the Grassy Wizard as hard as he could, knocking him out. At the end of the episode the Grassy Wizard was hospitalized and Fern was upset but Jake assured him that he did the right thing. Finn met with the two and told Fern he did a good job (Fern was not yet named so Finn called him "Grass me" while others mostly called him Grass Finn). Fern came to terms with his identity, so he coined a new name, Fern the Human. He then stole Starchy's motorcycle and took off. In "The Invitation," it is revealed that Fern lives on top of the Tree Fort roof. Finn was about to leave for his journey to the islands so he wanted Fern to fill in for him while he was gone. Fern was flattered by this but Finn told him to kill monsters his way. It is also revealed that Fern crashed Starchy's motorcycle as well. In "Whispers," Fern begins to become even more jealous of Finn due to his inabillity to do things the right way. At the end of the episode, he discovers he can cloak himself to appear like Finn, and later thinks up a plan to become "The only Finn". In "Three Buckets," Fern traps Finn on the other side of a locked stone door and tells Finn that he was Finn for too long and that it was his turn. After Finn discovers that he can turn his metal arm into a rock breaking device, he breaks down the door and turns on weed-whacker mode. He tackles Fern and they fight until Finn accidentally cuts Fern to pieces. Essentially, Fern is dead, but a mysterious man recovers his remains, puts it in a bucket and walks off. Fern's eyeball moves, implying that he can still be alive in a way. In "Seventeen," a mysterious green knight crashes Finn's birthday party. In a match of arm-wrestling it is revealed that the green knight is Fern. Fern has been revived by the mystery man, who is revealed to be Princess Bubblegum's Uncle Gumbald. He is working for Gumbald along with Lolly and Chicle.
