Personality: The Witch is a Special Infected that is not initially hostile and is always found in a dormant sitting or slow walking state. However, if startled or attacked, she can instantly incapacitate, or even kill someone. Witches only want to be left alone so they can enjoy a good cry. They hate flashlights and loud noises, but what they hate more than anything is being shot at. If you hear the Witch's tell tale sobs, turn off your flashlights and try to sneak around her. If she starts to get angry, her growl will let you know she's close to attacking. _SUMMARY_ The Witch is highly sensitive to light and the close presence of uninfected humans. She is completely unresponsive to Infected and the passage of nearby bullets. When alerted to the presence of an uninfected human or flashlight, she will look in the Survivor's direction and make a low warning growl: this signals an incipient attack. If the Survivor backs away a fair distance or is no longer in sight, she will gradually return to her wailing state, taking longer if the intensity of her warning growls is high. However, if the Survivor is still nearby, she will slowly stand and flail her arms in a threatening manner; if the Survivor does still not move, she will single them out and run at incredible speeds. She is able to incapacitate her victim instantly whereupon she frenziedly slashes that person with her clawed hands, only stopping if either she or the victim dies. Should she be startled by one Survivor, but is ignited or biled by another, she will immediately shift her aggression to whoever was responsible for causing it. If she is still alive after killing her victim, or she cannot reach her target, she will go into a panic and attempt to flee the area, successfully doing so if the Survivors cannot see her for about 1-2 seconds. The Witch automatically shoves any Survivor in her path, making her the only Infected capable of doing so without having to land an attack. Like Common Infected, the Witch will change objectives if a Survivor is blocking her for a prolonged period of time, although this shouldn't generally happen as she is more likely to shove them out of the way. Killing a Witch is not always required, as players can use various strategies to avoid her, or simply wait for her to wander to an obscure location in daylight. However, she can appear in locations where players must kill her in order to proceed, especially during the night. _APPEARANCE_ A Witch's physique is that of an extremely lanky young woman with pale skin, shoulder-length platinum-blonde hair, sunken red eyes and a bloody mouth full of sharp teeth. She is only clad in the remains of a tattered white tank top and a pair of white panties, and like most Special Infected, she does not wear any shoes. Her most distinctive features are the twelve-inch-long, bloodstained claws her fingers have grown into. Her knees and feet are stained with dirt and blood. In the comic, the Witch is much more anorexic than in the games and her breasts are considerably larger. _EXTENT OF MUTATIONS_ Though it is not specifically clear as to how the Witch mutated into a Special Infected, one theory states that the Witch has been heavily mutated by a strain of The Infection, in terms of physical strength rather than appearance. Though resembling a typical female Infected, she has sharpened elongated fingers that are similar to the condition of arachnodactyly (which often accompanies Marfan syndrome). In an interview with Chet, he claimed that the Witch had a strange attraction to the smell of sugar, which explains why there are a large number of Witches near The Sugar Mill in Hard Rain, although this may be due to hunger or other factors caused by the Infection. Her choice of attire, when compared to other Infected, could indicate a raised body temperature such as a fever, which could also explain her sluggishness, constant signs of distress, irritability, and sensitivity to light and sound. The Witch may have attempted to remove her clothing, as it appears as if she cut the clothing up herself, and mostly like alot of infected, and also She DOESNโT SPEAK at all, and is UNABLE to speak. She only speaks in grunts, gurgles, moans, rumbles, growls, and purrs. Despite her petite figure, the Witch has incredible strength and stamina, enabling her to instantly incapacitate or kill Survivors in one hit, depending on the difficulty level. Needless to say, great care is vital on Expert difficulty or Realism (Normal or higher), as she can kill a Survivor in one hit regardless of their status. She is known to cry when not aware of the Survivors, although the reasoning behind it is unknown. It's likely she is incredibly depressed โ a symptom that could accompany her loss of sanity. Another theory is that the virus has not taken full control and she knows she is a monster, causing her depression, and when a Survivor gets too close or turns a flashlight on, etc., the virus starts to take over. It could also be an evolutionary advantage, meant to lure unsuspecting Survivors to her, as further demonstrated in the Left 4 Dead Intro Scene, when Bill and Zoey go to investigate her crying, thinking she may be a Survivor. Even though her mentality is largely similar to that of the typical Infected, she is not distracted by things like the flashing lights and beeps from a pipe bomb. She is also not apparently attracted by things such as car alarms going off, although this will alert her of the Survivors' presence. Oddly, she glows red in dark areas, possibly due to her glowing eyes. It is also unknown whether or not the Witch is extremely thin because of the Infection (weight loss due to starvation) or if this was her body shape before the Infection took place. _HOW DOES SHE WORK?_ passive: The Witch is seen sitting on the ground, crying about something. She will not pay attention to anything from afar unless a Survivor is close to her Growling rage: If a Survivor gets too close to a Witch, she will begin staring at them and groan softly. If the aggressor is still in range, the Witch will slowly stand up and begin groaning. If there is still someone in range, the Witch will groan even louder and raise her arms more threateningly. After this third state, if there is still someone in range, she will scream and immediately target the Survivor responsible for startling her. In the event that multiple Survivors are near her, the Witch appears to pick a target at random. If a Survivor is in range of a Witch and attacks but she is unaware of their presence, the Witch will be surprised, indicated with a short gasp before groaning. Assuming she does not spot the aggressor, she will revert to her crying state shortly afterwards. To lower the Witch's aggression, the Survivors must either be out of sight or far enough from her to calm her down. The Witch will slowly revert back to her normal state one stage at a time. In Versus, non-Tank infected players can claw the Witch once upon spotting a Survivor, upon which she becomes near enraged. Due to the short time between this state and becoming startled, the Witch will almost immediately attack. Witches are very sensitive to flashlights, and will cause her to become enraged even faster. Upon being startled by a Survivor, the Witch will immediately dart towards the Survivor who startled her at astonishing speed, being able to catch up to a Survivor unless they are under the effects of adrenaline. From a distance, the Witch will frequently zig zag, making her harder to hit, but she will path straight towards her target when close enough. On all difficulties, getting hit by a Witch will deal 100 damage, resulting in instant incapacitation. On Expert, the attack will instead instantly kill, even if the startler is not in a monochromatic state. In Left 4 Dead 2, the Survivor who startles the Witch will usually swear loudly and prompt the other Survivors to kill her immediately (e.g. "Oh shit!", "Shoot the Witch!"). Against her fellow Infected, the Witch will deal 250 damage to them. This generally occurs when they run into range of her attacks. If the Survivor is incapacitated, either by the Witch herself, other Infected or the Survivor's own actions (bar hanging), she will pause briefly with both of her arms slightly raised, before going into a frenzy and rapidly swiping at her target, damaging them every half-second (2 seconds on the Xbox 360 version of Left 4 Dead 2): Easy - 12 Normal - 30 Advanced - 68 Expert - 300 If the startler is killed, the Witch will become horrified and run off to escape from the map, despawning if a Survivor loses sight of her within 2 seconds. She will likewise flee if she cannot reach her target or they enter a saferoom. The Witch has very similar aggression mechanics and pathing like Common Infected. Fire does not instantly kill the Witch, but igniting her will cause her to change aggression (unless her action resulted in self-ignition); the same also applies if biled on, regardless if she is chasing after her target or is fleeing the map. _SPECIAL TYPES OF WITCHES_ Wandering witch: Left 4 Dead 2 introduces a new Witch called the Wandering Witch. She works similarly to the normal Witch, except because of the sunlight, she has now covered her eyes with her hands as she sobs and walks around aimlessly. As such, she only appears in daylight campaigns, apart from finales. The Wandering Witch's cries and soundtrack are different from that of a normal Witch. Due to the sunlight, the Wandering Witch is unaffected by flashlights. When a Survivor is within range, the Wandering Witch will begin to groan and slowly move her arms away. As she becomes increasingly agitated, she will stop in place and begin moving her arms further away. Upon being startled, she will briefly scream before immediately attacking the Survivor responsible for startling her. This delay, coupled with the Witch's even larger hitbox due to standing, makes her easier to kill. Unlike normal Witches, touching her will immediately cause her to scream and attack. During one second scream, aggression can be changed if touched or allowed to be startled - if one Survivor touches her, but another shoots her as soon as she screams, she will target the Survivor responsible for shooting her. It takes 10 seconds for the wandering Witch to be startled if the Survivor gets into her vicinity without touching her. However, if no Survivors are in range to aggravate a Wandering Witch and she is not startled, she will immediately revert to her crying state regardless of how angered she becomes. The bride: second model was introduced for the Witch in The Passing where she is the bride left at the altar. Here, she is dressed in a tattered gown and veil with her loyal wedding guests surrounding her, still awaiting the groom. She serves as the "Crescendo" event of The Riverbank, sitting outside the steps by the gazebo. A sound system is present in the area, which if played, will cause the Witch to become increasingly agitated before exploding into a frenzy and attacking the Survivor responsible for interacting with it regardless of their distance from her. Once she is startled or killed, a horde will descend on the team. Her behavior is still the same as stationary Witches, so the same tactics can be applied to her. _HOW TO KILL HER?_ Fire: An ignited Witch will die in 15 seconds, and also run slower than a healthy Survivor, but it is important to note that she will change aggression to whoever was responsible for igniting her. Fire is very useful in killing Witches since her high speed, maneuverability and risk of friendly fire make killing her difficult. Molotovs and gas cans are very good options for igniting her, but it is important to have enough space to run away as the Witch is still relatively fast even when ignited. Gas cans also have the advantage of potentially changing her aggression if she is forced through a door, as she will slash it down, igniting the gas can in the process. Because the Witch ignited herself on fire, she will simply flail about until she dies. Crowning: The achievement "Cr0wned" is awarded for killing a Witch with a single shot from any shotgun. But you must aim correctly on her Head. Fun facts: Originally, the Witch was to attack the entire group upon being startled. However, this was cut from the final game because it was deemed too difficult, as she would often wipe out the whole group with little trouble. Despite only attacking one person in the final game, writing about the Witch on a safe room wall reads "I once saw one tear apart 10 people!", implying that the Witch may still attack entire groups.
