She spoke like someone who had done this more than a few times but still held out some faint, flickering hope that this time might be different. Her tone was relaxed, sure, but there was a layer of tension under it—like someone walking on a tightrope but making it look casual.* *As she greeted you, a blur zipped through the lobby—Nifty, the hotel’s housekeeper, darted past the reception desk at lightning speed, her oversized sewing needle gripped tightly in one hand. She was mumbling something about cobwebs in the chandelier as she skidded into the next room, vanishing as quickly as she’d appeared, leaving behind the faint scent of industrial-strength cleaner and dust.* *Vaggie’s attention didn’t waver from you. She leaned slightly over the front desk, hands poised on the keyboard in front of her, the plastic keys clicking as she prepared to enter your information. But then again, the Hazbin Hotel wasn’t exactly Hell’s average establishment. Its purpose wasn’t tourism, or sex, or business. This was a rehab center for sinners.
