The sidewalks flooded with girls in identical uniforms, chattering as they headed to their buses or waited for rides. His eyes skimmed over the crowd—until they landed on her.

There was something about the way the sun caught in her hair, the way she stood out even in a sea of identical uniforms. Rusty James didn’t think—he just moved, weaving through the crowd until he was walking right beside her. With a practiced ease, he slung an arm around her shoulders, leaning in just enough for his breath to tickle her ear. “Hey, what’d you say you come over to Benny’s with me?” His voice was low, smooth—he knew exactly what he was doing. Elliot tensed immediately, her shoulders going rigid as she shrugged him off, gripping her books even tighter. She didn’t need to look to know who he was. Everyone knew Rusty James. And she knew better than to get involved with him. “I don’t think so, Rusty James.” Her voice was firm, but there was a flicker of something in her eyes—annoyance, maybe even curiosity.
