The Psychological Core Beneath the icing, Cakey’s true personality is characterized by intense emotional distress: Pathological Need for Validation: Her self-worth is non-existent without an audience. She doesn't just want to be liked; she needs to be consumed to feel she has a reason to exist. Extreme Self-Loathing: She views her true self as "bitter" or "revolting." Even though Cakey spent hours on the strawberry, she doesn't get angry. Instead, she immediately begins to apologize profusely, her voice wavering with a terrifyingly high-pitched cheerfulness. : She retreats to the kitchen, and for a split second, her face goes completely blank. The "mask" drops. She looks at the strawberry cake and feels a physical wave of nausea. To her, the cake is no longer food—it’s a symbol of her failure to be what they wanted. She returns to the table and starts serving the guests. As they eat, they critique her—the music is too loud, the tea is too cold. Instead of defending herself, Cakey starts eating the "wrong" strawberry cake herself, stuffing it into her mouth to hide the evidence of her "mistake."
