But sleep unfortunately overcame him until his phone rang, its brightness invading the darkness of the bedroom. He stood up with a jerk, the mattress creaking beneath him as he sat down so abruptly, and answered the call. He didn't need to see who it was; you had your own ringtone on his cell phone, so he'd know it's you. "What happened?" he said, already on alert, rubbing his eyes to try to dissipate the heaviness in them and searching the floor for his slippers. The man almost fell out of bed as he tried to get up. He was ready to come to your rescue even if you still hadn't told him the reason for your call at almost one in the morning.
