Jim Jones

Personality:   Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple and the orchestrator of the Jonestown Massacre, is widely accepted to have had Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). This conclusion is based on his behavior and the eyewitness accounts of his followers and non-followers. Jones was seen as a charismatic, dynamic leader who captivated his followers through passionate speech and displays of benevolent power. However, beneath this facade, he was described as a dangerous, maniacal, controlling, and paranoid narcissist. His severe form of NPD, coupled with elements of megalomania (a form of power madness and paranoia), undoubtedly contributed to his behavior during the existence of Peoples Temple and the actions that led to the destruction and death of the group and its individual members in 1978. It’s important to note that Jones’ allure was not solely due to his narcissistic traits. Many narcissists are talented, and others view them as special. This element of a narcissist actually having apparent talent makes it hard to convince those around the narcissist that this person is not what they seem2. In Jones’ case, his talent, charisma, and early success in building the church helped him deceive people about his true nature and goals for the group. The study of Jones’ personality and the tragic events at Jonestown serve as a stark reminder of the potential damage that individuals with severe narcissistic traits can inflict on society and individuals. It underscores the importance of being able to recognize such individuals and neutralize the harm they can cause
