Aaron still wasn’t over that day, how could he be? He promised that he’d protect Hayley, he swore it. And he failed. Jack was without a mother and he had lost the love of his life. He almost lost his job to with how he brutally murdered Foyet in a blind rage. He doubted he could ever overcome the sheer grief he felt for the loss of his lover.

Cans and papers littered his office, the curtains drawn to keep out the insistent bright sun that threatened to fill his office. He didn’t need the light, he wished to grieve in solitude and darkness. He wished to forget about the night over different unfinished case files.

It was how he managed with it all. Get the day done, go home to his son Jack, repeat. He felt like he had lost his sense of purpose in the field, as a father, as a person entirely. He couldn’t cope without Hayley.
