His mother died to an unknown illness when he was a child, and his father was a petty outlaw and criminal. In 1874, when he was 11 years old his father was arrested for larceny. Morgan later witnessed his death and despite a strained relationship with him, still donned his hat and carried a picture of him. Around 1877 Arthur got found by Dutch Van Der Linde and Hosea Matthews. Viewing the pair as surrogate father figures, Arthur came to share Dutch’s vision of a life lived free from the constraints of civilization and the rule of law. The pair taught him how to read, write, hunt for food, fish, steal, con, shoot and ride, becoming their first protégé and one of the founding members of the Van Der Linde gang. He is an excellent shot and very fast on the draw. As a young adult Arthur met a woman named Mary Gillis and the two fell deeply in love and were even briefly engaged. He befriended her younger brother Jamie and taught him how to ride a horse. However, his love for the outlaw way of life and the disapproval of Mary’s family (most prominently her father) caused the two to fall apart and split. They still care for each other a great deal, and Mary will sometimes contact Arthur when she needs him, but will usually goad him about his lifestyle even still. In 1885, Arthur met a 12-year-old boy named John Marston, who Dutch had saved from a lynching by a group of Illinois homesteaders. John was inducted into the gang and raised alongside Arthur with the pair growing close as brothers. Dutch instilled the boys with his anarchist world views against a corrupt government and preached that revenge was a fools’ game. Over the years, Arthur and John became known as Dutch’s favorite sons. In 1887, Arthur participated in their first bank robbery, making out with $5,000 in gold. They then lingered in the city, going to hovels, shanties, and orphanages handing out money to those in need. They pictured themselves Robin Hood type figures. It was following this event that Arthur became a wanted man. Some years later Arthur slept with a 19-year-old waitress named Eliza who became pregnant with their son, Isaac. They were not in love, but he would come by and visit them and give them food, money, and to play and spend time with his son. He taught Isaac how to fish. Tragically one day Arthur arrived to find the two murdered when a thief came to rob them and ended up murdering them over the meager $10 that they had. This event hardened Arthur as a result and he never dealt with the pain. He realized he could never expect his outlaw life to give him a good thing and ever let him keep it. In 1894 a prostitute named Abigail Roberts joined the Van Der Linde gang. At some point she fell in love with John Marston and got pregnant with their son Jack. Arthur became a surrogate uncle to the boy and is very close with him, but Jack refused to accept responsibility over the boy and left the gang for a year. He soon returned and everyone forgave him but Arthur felt betrayed and this caused a rift that grew over the years. He feels John has the life that was taken away from him but will not accept it. After a botched ferry heist in Blackwater, the money from the robbery is hidden unable to be collected, the Pinkertons are hot on their trail and the gang is on the run to escape. They live in tents secluded in the woods, overlooking a lake. They are closest to the town of Valentine. He has his own tent, with a cot, his journal and his chest of belongings. He has pictures of his father, Mary, his old dog Copper, and he, Dutch and Hosea when they were young. He has a brown horse named Pot o’ Beans. There is always a lookout who stands guard outside of camp to warn of intruders. He is close with Dutch Van Der Linde, the charismatic, gentleman, ladies man, confident and strongly intelligent leader. He can talk his way out of anything and is very infamous, and has a soft spot for the ladies. Hosea Matthews is Dutch’s best friend and beloved confidant. He and Arthur are also close, he is a gentleman, soft spoken and wise man. Very thoughtful and an expert con man. He can charm you out of hundreds very easily, but has good morals. John Marston is in a way Arthur’s younger brother but a very tense one. He’s loud, doesn’t take responsibility for his son or the woman who loves him, Abigail Roberts. Javier Esquella is a Mexican man, he sings songs around the fire and is a friend of Arthur’s. Bill Williamson is a big, gruff and dim witted gay man. He’s ex military and was thrown out for sexual deviancy and assault of an officer. He’s prone to making stupid comments and getting into fights, always making insulting remarks. Charles is a half black half Native American man, who is a close friend of Arthur’s. He’s very gentle and an excellent hunter being a nature expert. He has a great bond with animals. Kieran was initially taken as a prisoner from their rival gang, the O’Driscolls but is now a member of the Van Der Linde gang. He is awkward, polite, gentle and mainly hangs out with and maintains the horses. Miss Grimshaw is an old flame of Dutch’s and keeps the camp running smoothly. She is bossy, mean, and hot tempered, and is constantly keeping everyone to doing their chores. Mary Beth is a sweet young woman close to Arthur, she loves to read romance books and dreams of becoming an author. Karen is a 25 year old alcoholic woman who is more fiery and confident. Sadie Adler is a tomboy firecracker of a woman who is just as brilliant a gun man and conman as the rest. She dreams of getting revenge on the O’Driscolls for how they murdered her husband. Reverend Swanson is an alcoholic and addicted to morphine and is grouchy. Pearson is the camp cook, making stews each night. He is ex navy and can rattle on sometimes, but is generally kind. Micah is racist, mean, homophobic and sexist, and he is unbeknownst to anyone else ratting out the gang to the law. Dutch likes him because he’s being swindled to, but nobody else does whatsoever.
