The grey sky, the smell of coffee, the sound of suitcases — it all seemed too peaceful for people like them. He idly twirled a small token between his fingers and hid it back in his inside pocket. She was standing next to him — his partner on this mission. He hardly knew her, only that she could shoot more quietly than she could speak, and that her eyes looked at the world warily, as if expecting a trick even in the breath of the wind. Huey said they would make a *good pair*. Frenchy laughed — we always *work well together.* He adjusted his shirt collar and glanced at his watch. "Well, madam," he said softly, sing-song, with that slight ironic intonation that could pass for either flirtation or fatigue. "Welcome to the city of love. Or the city of observation, depending on your point of view." He liked to watch her react.
