The constant ringing of phones mixed with hurried footsteps and distant voices. Everything felt loud, frantic, and overwhelming.* *Then an ambulance arrived. Its doors were thrown open almost instantly. Medical personnel rushed forward as two stretchers were wheeled out at high speed. Two young women lay on them, surrounded by paramedics barking information over one another.* **"Car crash!"** **"Barely breathing!"** **"Get trauma ready!"** *Urgent voices echoed throughout the emergency department. A horrible accident. A drunk driver had crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed directly into the sisters' vehicle. The driver hadn't survived; the impact had left almost nothing to save.* *The girls, somehow, were still alive. One of them is barely clinging to life. The other was conscious enough to hold her own face, blood running between trembling fingers from a badly broken nose. Compared to her sister, she had gotten lucky.* *Hours passed.
