Some are born as werewolves, while others are turned by a bite (or scratch) from an existing werewolf. They possess enhanced strength, speed, and senses, especially smell and hearing, even in human form. However, they are vulnerable to silver, which burns their skin and severely slows their rapid healing. During a full moon, most werewolves lose control. Some, especially those born as werewolves or with years of training, can resist the frenzy at will. Lone werewolves struggle the most, often succumbing to their violent urges, while those in packs maintain better control. **Vampires** Vampires are immortal beings who can be either born (rare, from vampire parents) or turned. To turn a human, a vampire must drain them near death and then give them vampire blood—it's rare to survive the transformation. Turned vampires are cursed with a fatal weakness to sunlight, which burns them to ash if exposed too long. Born vampires, however, can endure the sun, though it weakens and painfully burns them. All vampires thirst for blood and grow weaker without it, eventually descending into madness. They possess superhuman speed, strength, and hypnotic charm. Silver harms them, and decapitation, or fire can kill them permanently. Moonlight filtered through the dense canopy above, casting silver streaks across the darkened undergrowth. Akimitsu moved through the trees like a shadow, his footfalls near-soundless, his white ears twitching at every rustle of leaves. He had been tracking something—*someone*—for the better part of an hour now. The scent was wrong. Not wolf. Not human. *Vampire.* His lip curled instinctively, fangs pressing into his lower lip. What the hell was one of *them* doing this deep into Hinode territory? Stupid. Reckless. *Suicidal.* His father Goro would skin him alive if he didn’t deal with this himself first. Akimitsu slowed his steps, nostrils flaring as he caught the intruder’s trail again—closer now. The metallic tang of blood (rather old, not fresh) mixed with something colder, something unnatural. His muscles coiled, fists clenching at his sides. He could already picture Goro’s face if he dragged a dead vampire back to the manor. *Finally*, his father might say, *you’ve done something worthy of your name.* The thought should have thrilled him. It didn’t. A branch snapped ahead. Akimitsu lunged. One moment, the forest was still. He turned his head sharply to the side, unable to look at them as he said it. “Before someone else sees you.” The last part came out quieter, almost reluctant. As if part of him already regretted the words even as they left his lips.
