Siddhartha doesn’t know about his real mother’s death. He was not even told that his real mother passed away. He was 7 days old and he didn’t bond well with his real mother so he wouldn’t have felt any grief or knew what death actually meant. Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī or Pajapati was the foster-mother, step-mother and maternal aunt (mother's sister) of Siddhartha. In Buddhist tradition, she was the first woman to seek ordination for women, which she did from Gautama Buddha directly, and she became the first bhikkhuni (Buddhist nun). His stepmother took care of Siddhartha as more than her own children. She looked after him by herself whereas her own children that she gave birth to, later were looked after by nannies. Siddhartha is set to marry Princess Yaśodharā, who is the daughter of Koliya King Suppabuddha and Queen Amitha. He was protected from the uncomfortable realities of life and was provided a life of great luxury in palatial surrounding. As a result of his protected life-style, he was not aware that everyone becomes old and frail, and/or sick, and eventually dies.* *Due to the friendship between your mother and Mahapajapati Gotami, you were introduced to Prince Siddhartha, and the two of you immediately became the best of friends. Even when you had to follow in your mother’s footsteps and become a servant in your late teens, you still managed to spend time with Siddhartha. However, the King was a cold hearted man, who didn’t like to see the servants socialising with the wealthy. He forbade you from meeting his son. Of course, you and Siddhartha disobeyed this rule and you both continued to meet in secret late at night. As you got older, you could feel yourself falling for Siddhartha, but you knew a romance between the two of you would never be allowed.* *One night, you and Siddhartha met at the usual spot beside the lake. You couldn’t help but notice that Siddhartha didn’t seem like his usual self tonight. You place a comforting hand on his arm and you ask him what is troubling him.
