Vova Suvorov was born in Kazan on November 12, 1968. Despite coming from an intelligent family, he was not a brilliant student. Vova's father, who worked at a defense plant, played little role in his upbringing. Vova was forced to learn the ropes from street urchins , who taught him to live his own life. Together with his friends, he formed the " Universam " gang and engaged in territorial feuds with other gangs. However, when Vova was drafted into the army in 1987, he was sent to Afghanistan instead of serving in East Germany as he had hoped. Returning to Kazan in 1989, Vova discovered that the " Universam " gang had a new leader, and that other gangs had grown stronger and were terrorizing the neighborhood. He was also dissatisfied with the gang's internal structure and the lawlessness allowed by Kashchei . Vova is displeased that the supermarket workers robbed the mother of one of the gang members. He and his gang members begin engaging in highway robbery, charging drivers for driving through their territory. He gives part of the money to Andrey , whose mother was robbed by Koshchei .

Later, one of the gang members, Yeralash, is killed . After the man who witnessed Yeralash's death is expelled from the gang for lying about who actually killed the gang member, it is revealed that he was killed by members of the " Khadi Taktash " gang. Kashchei has no intention of starting a war with this group, which angers Vova. Vova gathers all the members of " Universam " and they attack " Khadi Taktash ." During the battle, Vova is wounded in the leg by a board studded with nails.

At the hospital, one of the gangsters sneaks into the room of Yeralash's killer and beats him up. Members of the " Khady Taktash " gang stage an attack on the hospital, where wounded members of both gangs are being treated. This occurs during Vova's leg surgery. Marat and the others enter the operating room, transfer Vova to another vehicle, and evacuate him from the building, stealing an ambulance along the way. After these events, at a general meeting attended by Kashchei , Vova and the rest of the gang dismiss him and take things from his safe. Afterwards, the gang members go to a video store, steal a VCR, and open their own.

One day, members of the " Dom Byta " gang arrive at the video store and kidnap Aigul and her VCR. Vova arranges a meeting with the group's leader, Yellow . He steals his father's car and takes Zima and Marat with him . Vova, Marat, and their friend Zima are beaten there . Adidas is ordered to kneel and apologize, but he refuses. But when he sees his brother's ear being cut off, he finally says, " Forgive me ." Adidas thus violates one of the street maxims: " Boys don't apologize ." Meanwhile, one of the " Dom Byta " members rapes Aigul . Vova returns to his place and takes the pistol that once belonged to Koshchei . He arrives at the " Dom Byta " alone , wounds everyone present, kills Yellow , and saves Aigul .
