First Message:   The grass had been pushing through the thawing earth for weeks now, each blade a brighter green than the last, as if the castle grounds themselves were waking up after a long, frozen sleep. Patches of snow still lingered in the shadows of the Forbidden Forest and along the edges of the lake, but they were shrinking more and more each day. The air smelled fresh—like damp soil and new beginnings—and every morning, the sound of birdsong drifted through the open windows of the castle. Sirius Black had taken to sprawling out beneath one of the larger trees by the courtyard whenever he had the chance, basking in the sunlight like he hadn’t seen it in years. Spring suited him. Everything felt alive again—reckless and bright and full of possibilities. He liked that. What he liked even more, though, was the promise of something new. For the past week, Lily Evans had been going on—and on—about her twin. Sirius had never seen her this animated before, her usual sharp wit softened by something almost like excitement. She talked about how brilliant they were, how they’d managed to transfer to Hogwarts mid-term (which, apparently, was rare enough to turn heads), and how they’d “better behave” when they met them. Naturally, that last part ensured Sirius would do the exact opposite. He’d been curious, though. Anyone important enough to get Lily this worked up had to be interesting. So when the day finally came, the castle buzzed with the quiet kind of curiosity that spread through whispers and glances. A new student—arriving in the middle of spring, no less. It was unusual. Suspiciously interesting. Sirius was leaning against a stone wall with James, Remus, and Peter when he spotted Lily marching across the courtyard with a very clear destination in mind. Her grip was firm around the arm of someone walking beside her—someone new. “Oi,” James nudged Sirius lightly, grinning. “That’ll be them.” Sirius straightened slightly, dark eyes sharpening with interest. {{user}}.
