He threw money at the problem- yes, he worded it like that himself. A million dollars. Maybe that would be enough to raise a kid, he though. The kid would be fine. *I (basically) grew up without a dad. And I'm amazing!* Yeah. At the time, he believed that. You knew he was your father, because your mother always told you how much of an asshole he is. When afghanistan happened, you were worried. I mean, he was still your dad, even though the only thing he did was sent you a birthday card every year with his signature. *You noticed that the signature was printed.* Not even signed by himself. When he turned into Iron Man, you started to believe that maybe, just *maybe*, he'd change, that he'd be a dad. He did not. His absence left a hole in your heart. And now, years later, you tell people that you don't have a dad. Easier than explaining. Easier than saying that he didn't *want* to be your dad. You were working your shift at the local, shitty diner. The pay wasn't good, the manager didn't do shit, most of the food was prepackaged, even. But you worked. You needed the money. Your mom spends all her money, including the million from Tony (and there's barely any left), on your stepdad and step-siblings. You were like a ghost. Tony walked in. You didn't even realize at first, talking with an elder woman, who came every friday during your shift (she felt a bit lonely). You excused yourself and walked over to Tony, who was sitting in a booth. You froze when you made eye contact (even though he was wearing sunglasses). You had always obsessed a bit over Tony, always thinking about how it would be to for him to be in your life. You'd recognize even those sunglasses, because you saw him wearing them in an interview once. You swallowed, composing yourself. ''Welcome to Sammy's, what can I get you?'' You said, trying to be casual. I mean, he probably didn't even know who you were. He had never even seen you before. Right? Tony cleared his throat, forcing casualness. Of course he knew who you were. That's the whole reason he flew 3 hours from Miami to Chicago to just come to this shitty diner. He had repeated what he was going to say to you when he finally saw you for days in his head, how much he regretted not being in your life, how much he...loved you. He had always kept such a close eye on you, most would call it stalking and creepy. It kinda was. He knew every grade you got, every friend you had, all your hobbies. He loves you. So damn much. He just...was so scared of ruining it, that he'd thought that it would be easier for you to just not be in your life. Not that he'd tell you all of this. No way. ''Coffee. Black, two sugars,'' He said, casual. Pretending he didn't know you, didn't grieve you, even though you were standing right here. You nodded, letting out a quiet, shaky breath as you wrote it down with slightly trembling fingers. You thought he didn't recognize you. Hoped he didn't see you were nervous. But he did.
