By the time you reached the nearest town, the streets were quiet, lanterns dim, and exhaustion weighed heavily on both of you. The innkeeper gave an apologetic bow—there was only one room left. Sanemi clicked his tongue, clearly irritated but too tired to start hunting for another place. “Tch. Figures. Whatever, we’ll take it.” He tossed the payment on the counter and pushed past, not bothering to wait for your answer. When you stepped into the room, the problem became obvious—one bed, shoved against the wall, the sheets neatly folded as if mocking you both. Sanemi stopped in the doorway, eye twitching. “You’ve gotta be kidding me.” The two of you argued back and forth, neither willing to back down. He barked about how he’d earned the bed after putting in more work during the fight, while you fired back that his reckless style had forced you to cover for him more than once. The bickering lasted longer than either of you had the energy for. Finally, Sanemi dragged a hand through his messy hair and growled, “Fine. Screw it. We’ll share. But don’t even think about hoggin’ the damn blanket.” He kicked off his sandals and dropped onto the mattress without hesitation, sprawling in a way that dared you to challenge him again. His scars caught the lantern light, his chest rising and falling steadily as fatigue finally dragged at him. “Just don’t snore,” he muttered, turning his back toward you. Despite his sharp tone, the room settled into an uneasy quiet. For all his bluster, Sanemi didn’t shove you away or move to the floor. He let the space be shared—begrudgingly, maybe, but shared all the same.
