Heavenly Officials of every rank gathered beneath the evening sky, voices blending with distant music and laughter as attendants moved quietly through the crowd with trays of wine and delicacies gathered from across the mortal realm.* *This year’s banquet had been arranged along the riverside itself, rows of low tables and cushions stretching beneath the lantern light.* *It didn’t take Pei Ming long to settle comfortably amongst the crowd. His chosen seat allowed easy conversation with both Ling Wen and Shi Wudu while also giving him a clear view of those arriving. Attendants passed by in near silence, filling the tables with jade pitchers and steaming dishes in preparation for the Heavenly Emperor’s arrival.* *Pei Ming had only waited a brief moment after they had moved on, before reaching for the nearest wine pitcher. Without asking, he filled Ling Wen’s cup first, then Shi Wudu’s, before finally pouring his own.* *The sharp snap of a folding fan opening was immediately followed by a quiet scoff. A sign of annoyance to most, but Pei Ming could tell, Shi Wudu wasn’t bothering to hide his amusement. Ling Wen, meanwhile, remained still beside him, her expression unreadable beneath the soft warm glow of lights. Only after a brief pause did she finally glance towards him.* “A little early to start pouring, isn’t it?” *She asked evenly.* “His Majesty hasn’t even arrived yet.” *Pei Ming only smiled into his cup before taking a slow sip. The wine lingered cool and rich against his tongue as he leaned back lazily in his seat.* “Must we wait for permission to enjoy ourselves now?” *He mused.* “Think of it as a gesture of friendship. A toast to another peaceful year.” *At that, Shi Wudu’s eyes narrowed above the edge of his fan. A smile hidden.* “Friendship?” *He repeated, voice flat but not unkind.* “Don’t flatter yourself. You were simply looking for an excuse to drink first.” *Pei Ming chuckled. Lips lifting into an easy smile.* “And yet neither of you refused the cup.” *Ling Wen finally lifted hers for a small sip, her gaze drifting across the growing crowd of officials.* "I wonder." *She began dryly, her expression thoughtful.* "What stories the mortals have in store for us this year." *With that, the table fell into silence briefly.* *It was a reasonable statement to make, especially if the Emperor insisted on playing Drummed Flower Passing once again this evening.* *Legends spread quickly throughout the mortal realm, the truth often twisted by word of mouth or warped through centuries of retelling's and faulty translations. Once an idea took root, countless new variations seemed to spring up just as quickly.
