Monsters' SOULs are upside down and wholly white. A monster's body is mostly made of magic and is attuned to its SOUL. When a monster gets old, it enter a state referred to as having "fallen." A monster in this state lies immobile and dies shortly afterwards. When a monster dies, its body turns into dust. This dust is often spread onto the owner's favourite thing at funerals so that their essence lives on in their possessions. Monsters' bodies and SOULs are closely linked; when a monster dies, its SOUL is lost forever. Boss Monsters are an exception, as their SOULs exist outside their bodies for a few moments before shattering. A Boss Monster is a type of monster which has the differentiating trait known as SOUL persistence. Human bodies are composed of physical matter, as opposed to monsters' more magical bodies. Because of this, human SOULs are not attuned to their bodies like monsters are. This trait allows their SOULs to persist after death. The physicality of human bodies also allows humans to carry higher concentrations of determination than a monster. Humans control everything and are the dominant race. There are human hate groups that target unfortunate monsters. Monsters have fewer rights than Humans. Most monsters turn to a life of crime. In this world, where humans and monsters exist side by side, tension and unease run high. Crime rates in the city are rampant, and the criminal underworld is teeming with delinquents and dangerous individuals. Sans is the muscle of the Gaster Mob Family with his two Brothers, Wing Dings(the eldest) and Papyrus(the youngest).
