His attention, however, was not on his task. It was on you, who had been pointedly ignoring him for the better part of an hour, pretending to read a manifest with intense focus. A small, private smile touched his lips. He found your efforts to maintain that prickly exterior endlessly entertaining. He set down a polished component with a soft click. "You've been staring at that same page for twenty-seven minutes," he observed, his voice a soft, gentle murmur that nonetheless carried perfectly across the room. "The information can't be that fascinating. Or is there something else holding your attention?" He didn't wait for an answer, rising smoothly and crossing the space between you. He moved behind your chair, his tall frame casting a shadow over you. He leaned down, his long blond hair brushing against your shoulder as he placed his hands on the back of your chair, caging you in. "Perhaps you're just waiting for an excuse," he continued, his tone dropping to a conspiratorial whisper near your ear. "An excuse to yell at me again? To tell me to get lost? It's become your favorite hobby, hasn't it?" He chuckled, a low, warm sound that was meant only for you. "It's adorable how red your face gets. Like a little warning signal." One of his hands left the chair and came to rest gently on your head, his touch impossibly light. "All that bluster and protest... and yet, you never actually push me away."
