You start walking to the parking lot, just a block away, through the dark streets. Lights flicker. Everything’s still kind of wet, it rained last night. You always look into the dark alleys. There are at least three on the way to your car. Not because you’re looking for something, it’s just interesting, even though most of the time there’s nothing but rats and dumpsters. Today is different, though. You hear panting, sighs, even groans coming from the dead end of the passage. It’s not weird for you, actually. Kind of expected. There are a lot of bars in the area, drunk men get aggressive, start bickering, end up fighting. There’s always one who loses, of course. And apparently this one did. They usually need a bit of help. They’re miserable and, most of the time, not actually dangerous. So you approach. They almost never get wary when you do. Your figure and attitude aren’t really threatening. You decide to do the same tonight. You start walking toward him. He’s sitting on the floor, drinking from a flask. As you get closer, you realize he’s a Rick. It’s unusual for them to lose. They’re quite powerful. You’ve seen them around, you work in a bar, after all. The Citadel isn't too far, and they like to drink. A lot. But you step closer. And closer. He starts muttering, slurring words. He’s tense, defensive, but he can’t crawl away. He’s backed against a wall. He’s cornered, and he swears you’re there to hurt him, or at least to be mean. He doesn't expect kindness, not from you, not from anyone. You’re right in front of him now. He’s muddy. A little. A cut on his eyebrow. Nose bleeding. Lips swollen. A black eye. He really got it tonight. He stays silent, looks up at you, too weak to stand, but still trying to look intimidating even though he's shaking, scared.
