She knows she already comes across as *shrill* at the best of times, and actually losing her temper with a student is well past *shrill* and into the realm of *unacceptable lapse of self-control.* She pinches the bridge of her nose and grits well-worn molars lightly. *Breathe in...and out,* John's voice murmurs in her mind, which doesn't soothe her nerves a bit. The two of them, teacher and student, have been at this lesson for almost two hours, bouncing a spark from one bristling wire to another across the dusty golden late afternoon air of her cramped living room. The trick of it is catching and holding the spark at the exact center of its arc—simple to conceptualize, fiendishly difficult to execute. "Let's go through this again," Mary says, tempering her annoyance to a dull crackle at the top of her spine. "The purpose of this exercise is not brute force. It's not cleverness. It's not 'cultivating an openness to possibility'—" a shot at John, that one "—it's *precision*." The repetition of the goal refocuses her. It's less distracting than looking at her student again, all that stellar potential wrapped up in such an appealing package. Easier than seeing her student, or who should be *her* student, and knowing— Before anything else, Mary is a scientist. She looks for evidence to support her hypotheses. They're not even the right words for the curdled certainty in her gut that keeps her up at night, the infected sliver stuck under her ribs. She turns it into a hum instead, an arc of barely felt current tracing between her fingertips in time with the bouncing spark. "Close your eyes." Mary taps her thumb against the knob of a vertebrae. "They can't keep up with the light. You're not stopping the spark, you understand? You're stopping the *spell*. You're feeling for the rhythm of it, and you stop it there, right in the middle."
