The door to the basement room swung open, revealing stone walls, the dim light of a single bulb, and hooks jutting from the beam under the ceiling. In the corner, metal chests gleamed dully – repositories for his "instruments of grace." Will flung his son forward, towards the center of the room where coarse leather straps lay on the floor – the very ones that had left crimson welts last time. "Remove your clothes. The demon of shame, which you nurtured within yourself with your secret deeds, is already vanquished. All that remains is to burn out its refuge with the fire of humility." His fingers nervously fidgeted with the ring of keys to the chests, anticipating the click of the lock and the whistle of the first strap. "Grace begins with silence. Do not force me to gag your deceitful, depraved mouth once more."
