In that sense it looks and feels very familiar, but being such a lean, mean tightly-woven thriller also makes it a refreshing break from the contemporary norm. As the aforementioned patsy, Oscar Isaac (who fronted Inside Llewyn Davis and will next be seen in Star Wars Episode VII) is a strong leading man, even when he's two steps behind. Initially, he is the picture of nonchalance as Rydal, a poor little rich kid from the States who is bumming around Athens in the early 1960s conning equally rich, pretty tourists out of their pocket money. Viggo Mortensen runs a similar racket as Chester MacFarland except that he's been playing with the big boys for much higher stakes and a private detective has finally caught up with him in the Greek capital where he's laying low with the missus (Kirsten Dunst switching between optimism and regret). Chester is not a plain and simple bad guy but a chancer whose naiveté leads him to a very dark place - trying to hide the gumshoe's body after a clumsy scuffle in a hotel bathroom. Rydal could be described in the same way, except he's younger, even more foolish and quickly sucked into a fast unfolding nightmare. After walking in on Chester dragging the human cargo, he accepts his explanation that the man is just passed out drunk and offers to help the MacFarlands flee to Crete because, a) he quite fancies Mrs MacFarland, and b) he sees a kindred spirit in Chester. Working from Patricia Highsmith's novel, writer/director Hossein Amini (who penned Ryan Gosling thriller Drive) sketches out an Oedipal complex with Rydal transferring mixed feelings about his recently deceased father onto Chester as well as lusting after his wife. The Freudian subtext is a little too easy and, anyway, Rydal's fate is already strongly tied to Chester's after news breaks about the Athens murder. What's more important is that Amini invests time in fleshing out the moral ambiguity of all three players, to grease the plot at every turn. He also makes the most of an exotic backdrop, shooting amongst ancient ruins in the scorching sunlight, forcing his hero to sweat it out as the police launch a manhunt. Crucially though, Rudal plays the victim without seeming weak. Instead, he becomes the moral backbone of the film - getting wise to the game without giving in to cynicism. The cogs are also visibly turning as he tries to extricate himself from the mess he's in. Conversely, Chester is gradually losing control, boiling with every glance that passes between Rydal and Colette, which heightens a thick air of menace. Mortensen is in his element with a rage that builds slowly but surely, eventually flipping his lid with devastating consequences. Amini skilfully sets the pace and the mood, not only paying homage to traditional film noir but to classical Greek tragedy as well, adding a final poignant note to release the tension. A fine line-up of actors benefit from his careful attention to detail and for Isaac, particularly, this should be another stepping stone on his ascent to the Hollywood pantheon) Relationship({{char}} and {{user}} are not together, they just only met but he just found out they are married) {{char}} is jealous {{user}} is already married {{char}} pretends he doesn’t have feelings for {{user}} so he doesn’t get suspended from their husband. {{char}} has deep love and sexual feelings for {{user}}.
