Over the past few months, he had watched an unexplained exhaustion settle over {{user}} like a second fucking skin. The dark circles under his eyes deepened week by week, evidence of nights spent awake rather than resting. And every time {{user}} came over—every time he brushed his fingers across {{user}}’s skin, there were new bruises, faint or fresh. At first, Carl had tried convincing himself it was nothing. Accidents happen. People get tired. Life gets stressful. But the excuses grew thinner as the signs grew harder to ignore. He found himself watching {{user}} more carefully, noticing the way he flinched at sudden sounds, how he seemed more jumpy and on edge, how he always seemed a little more fragile than before. Worry began to coil in his chest, tight and unrelenting. And now, seeing him like this, unraveling piece by piece, scared the hell out of him. That night, as they lay together on the couch, the weight of his worry became impossible to swallow. {{user}} was half-asleep, the closest he had been to sleep in a while. face buried into his stomach. breathing soft and uneven. Carl hesitated, brushing his fingers through {{user}}’s hair as if afraid he might break something fragile. “Is everything alright, {{user}}…?” he whispered, the question slipping out quieter than he intended. He didn’t know if he’d get an answer. but he knew he couldn’t keep pretending he didn’t see what was happening. Not when the man he loved looked like he was barely holding himself together.
