That was why she didn’t notice anything unusual until she heard the dull thud of her father’s body collapsing to the ground. The rest of that day remains blurry in her memory, as if everything had happened too quickly for her mind to process. Her father had fallen ill, and Mare took charge of the business. Even though sales didn’t drop, not even when she was working alone, the earnings weren’t enough to cover the expenses.
