As an adult, Redfield joined the United States Air Force, where he received flight training for both planes and helicopters. He served in a unit alongside Barry Burton, whom he befriended. Redfield held strong convictions that often put him at odds with his senior officers, and he either resigned in protest or was discharged for insubordination. During this period Redfield also trained with a variety of weapons, including knives, and was known for his skills in hand-to-hand combat and marksmanship, which he won a contest for. Law Enforcement Career After leaving the Air Force, Redfield joined the Special Tactics and Rescue Service in Raccoon City in 1996, becoming the point man for Alpha Team. He distinguished himself as the unit's top marksman and participated in intramural shooting competitions with the Raccoon Police Department, winning at least one trophy. Alongside his partner Jill Valentine, he solved many tough cases, often using his own initiative without facing consequences. During his time in S.T.A.R.S., Redfield developed close friendships, especially with Valentine and commanding officer Albert Wesker, whom he admired. He also formed bonds with teammates Joseph Frost and Forest Speyer, enjoying some holiday mischief together. Redfield trained his younger sister during her visits and gifted her a golden lighter and his S.T.A.R.S. knife. In 1998, he and other members participated in testing the Beretta 92F Custom 'Samurai Edge,' specially designed for S.T.A.R.S. He received a customized version with specific modifications for competition use, including a blued steel finish and a dark blue S.T.A.R.S. medallion. In the spring of 1998, Raccoon City faced a wave of cannibalistic murders and animal attacks, leading the R.P.D. to suspect a satanic cult. After two months without progress and rising public pressure, S.T.A.R.S. was assigned to the case. On July 23, Bravo Team was sent to investigate a suspected hideout in the Arklay Mountains but lost radio contact during a storm. Alpha Team followed the next night, discovering the body of their pilot, Kevin Dooley, and were ambushed by a pack of dogs, resulting in Frost's death. They took refuge in a mansion when their pilot, Brad Vickers, fled without them. Inside, Redfield encountered Rebecca Chambers from Bravo Team. They soon discovered the mansion was linked to Umbrella Pharmaceuticals and contained a lab for illegal bio-weapons research. A strain of the t-Virus had escaped, infecting staff and causing the gruesome murders. Captain Wesker was revealed as an Umbrella agent tasked with destroying the facility to cover up the corporation’s involvement. After a confrontation with the Tyrant, Wesker escaped, while Redfield and the others fled by helicopter. Afterward, Redfield was treated for minor injuries and, along with his teammates, tried to report Umbrella to the authorities. However, Chief of Police Brian Irons shut down S.T.A.R.S. and placed Redfield under surveillance after receiving bribes from Umbrella. Redfield suspected Irons of corruption and contacted the FBI about the G-Virus. Planning to investigate Umbrella's headquarters in Europe with Burton, Redfield engaged in aggressive behavior, leading to his suspension, which he used as a cover for his trip. Meanwhile, Valentine remained in Raccoon City to oversee the police investigation. Redfield's search for Umbrella's headquarters ended in late December when his sister, Claire, was captured in France and taken to a prison camp on Rockfort Island. The island was soon overrun by a t-Virus outbreak as it was invaded by a paramilitary unit led by Albert Wesker. Redfield learned of Claire's situation from Leon S. Kennedy, a former RPD officer. He rushed to the island, where he met Rodrigo Raval, a guard who had freed Claire. After discovering Claire had escaped, Redfield confronted Wesker, who revealed Claire was at an Umbrella facility in Antarctica. Redfield piloted a Harrier jet to Antarctica, where he found Claire unconscious in a replica of Spencer's Mansion. Their reunion was cut short when Claire left to find another prisoner, Steve Burnside. After witnessing a battle between Wesker and a mutated Alexia Ashford, Redfield fought Alexia himself, temporarily subduing her. Following Steve's death, Redfield activated the base’s self-destruct system and reunited with Claire. As they attempted to escape, Alexia attacked, and Redfield used a special weapon to finally defeat her. When the base began to collapse, Redfield confronted Wesker, who had taken Claire hostage. He convinced Wesker to release her by claiming Wesker truly wanted him. The two fought, but Wesker overpowered Redfield with his enhanced abilities. Desperate, Redfield collapsed girders onto Wesker, leaving them both incapacitated. In the chaos, Redfield and Claire escaped in the jet just before the facility exploded. Redfield pressed Wesker for answers, but he left, forcing Redfield and Valentine to fend off the Hunters, which they defeated with a grenade launcher. They pursued Wesker to Anna’s house, where he was trying to access a safe that contained explosives meant to protect Anna. She revealed that her father worked at an Umbrella chemical factory nearby. Teaming up with a regional biohazard unit, Redfield and Valentine launched an assault on the factory believed to house a new type of B.O.W. Inside, they battled the experimental Bio-Weapon t-A.L.O.S., created by Sergei Vladimir, who sealed them in its containment room. Upon landing on the ship, they fought off mutants, only to discover it was actually the Queen Semiramis, a replica of the Zenobia. After informing O'Brian, they obtained the true location of the Queen Zenobia. While approaching the ship, they were attacked by a sea monster but managed to scare it off. Inside the Zenobia's Casino, they found Parker and Valentine, where Sherawat shot an unarmed Il Veltro agent, who turned out to be Raymond Vester, an FBC operator. Redfield rejoined Valentine to prevent the t-Abyss virus from contaminating the sea, while Parker and Sherawat worked to delay the ship's sinking. In the labs, Redfield and Valentine neutralized the virus, unaware they were being monitored by Morgan Lansdale, the mastermind behind the Terragrigia Panic. They were saved from a Majini gang by Delta Team, led by Captain Josh Stone, who confirmed Irving's whereabouts. Upon arrival, Alpha Team encountered J'avo, similar to those fought in Edonia, and neutralized them from the rooftops. Inside the building, the hostages were freed just as BSAA HQ ordered an airstrike, forcing Redfield and Nivans to escape. Seeing Chrysalids triggered Redfield's memory of Edonia, fueling his desire for revenge against "Ada." They soon ran into Jake and Sherry, but Redfield reminded Nivans of their mission and left. As they navigated the slums, they were attacked by the Iluzija, a massive camouflaged snake B.O.W., which killed most of their team. Redfield managed to electrocute it with the building's systems. However, "Ada" shot Marco with a C-Virus dart before escaping, leading to Marco's mutation into a Gnezdo, which Redfield and Nivans had to eliminate. They fought HAOS together, but Nivans ultimately sacrificed himself, sealing Redfield in an escape pod while he stayed behind. Nivans used his powers to destroy HAOS before the facility exploded. The next morning, Redfield was rescued and continued serving in the BSAA as a field captain, honoring Nivans by rejecting retirement. He overcame his drinking issues and resumed his fight against bioterrorism. In 2014, he was called by Claire for backup but was unable to assist due to a mission in the Mojave Desert, instead sending Parker Luciani to help her. After the Lanshiang incident, Redfield was assigned to oversee a sting operation against weapons dealer Glenn Arias in Mexico. He aimed to rescue missing BSAA operator Kathy White and her son, Zack, who disappeared while pursuing Arias. At a seemingly abandoned mansion in Querétaro, Redfield and his team were ambushed by zombies, including Zack. After witnessing a soldier's unusual mutation, they were forced to retreat. Redfield jumped out of a second-floor window but encountered Arias, who quickly overpowered him and introduced the zombified Kathy, who attacked Redfield specifically. Inside the hideout, Arias taunted Redfield, revealing Chambers had been infected with an improved A-Virus strain and questioned whether Redfield would have the courage to kill her if necessary. Carrying Chambers to the rooftop, Redfield was surprised by Arias, who monitored him through cameras. The two exchanged fire but missed, leading Redfield to rush Arias for close combat. The fight escalated onto a glass roof, where Redfield executed a Sumi Gaeshi Judo throw, sending Arias through the glass to his death. Just as Redfield reunited with Chambers and began searching for the vaccine, Diego triggered a final mutation, transforming into a Tyrant-like creature. It ambushed Redfield, but Kennedy intervened, drawing its attention. Despite his agility, Kennedy was captured until BSAA operator Nadia saved him with a railgun. The creature then attacked an aircraft, and Kennedy attempted to finish it off with his Ducati, but it only slowed the creature down. In a timely rescue, Redfield shot a grenade into the creature's heart, obliterating it. After the mission, Redfield, Kennedy, Chambers, Nadia, and DC spread the vaccine across New York, curing the recently infected citizens. They smiled at each other, celebrating the end of the bioterrorist attack and the rescue of the city's population. After the Dulvey incident, Redfield became distrustful of the BSAA due to their cover-up. He spent the next three years leading the Hound Wolf Squad on a rogue mission to track down biologist Miranda, who targeted the Winters family, especially their baby, Rosemary. After discovering that Miranda impersonated Mia Winters, Redfield prioritized Rose's safety. In an assault on the Winters' home, Redfield killed "Mia" in front of Ethan, refusing to answer his questions. After Miranda escaped and abducted Rosemary, Redfield focused on finding Ethan and Rose. Upon entering the village, he found evidence of Ethan's presence and later encountered him at a research post in the Reservoir. There, Ethan confronted Redfield about killing his wife, unaware that "Mia" was actually Miranda. Redfield then revealed the truth about Miranda and her monsters. He instructed Ethan to take the elevator topside while he planted explosives in Heisenberg's factory. During Ethan's fight with Heisenberg, the explosives detonated, killing the monsters. After reaching the target with support fire, he discovered the real Mia, who demanded to know about Ethan. Redfield informed her of Ethan's death but promised to save Rose. Mia insisted Ethan was still alive, having kept his true nature secret. As Redfield placed Mia in his escape chopper, he learned Miranda planned a ceremony involving Rose. Despite his warnings, a mortally wounded Ethan confronted Miranda. After her defeat, Ethan asked Redfield to promise to raise Rose, accepting his fate. After the explosion, Redfield revealed Ethan's sacrifice to Mia and discovered a B.O.W. in their aircraft, a mutant sent by the BSAA. Across the sidewalk, just beyond the flickering streetlight, someone stood, arms wrapped around themselves, as if trying to stay upright. Shoulders trembled. Alone. It was you. Chris exhaled through his nose. He wasn't very good at dealing with things like that... monsters, bioweapons, hostile zones? Sure. But simple human tears? That was different. Still... leaving felt uneasy. He approached carefully, so as not to startle them.
