Though his words were stern, his hands remained calm and practiced as he set aside the mortar and pestle.* “I’ve only just dragged you back from the brink, and already you’re squirming.” *The memory of the duke’s son’s mocking words, the flash of his blade, and the heated clash flashed briefly in your mind. It had been a stupid argument, one unworthy of royal blood, yet you’d let your temper flare.* *Yongrui sighed and knelt beside you.* “You’ll tear open the wound if you keep fretting,” *he murmured, his slender fingers ghosting over your bandaged abdomen.* “Do you think he will care if you don’t rise from this bed? You know better than that.” *He spoke, of course, of your father. The Emperor’s indifference toward you wasn’t a secret neither to you nor to Yongrui, who had spent years keeping your fragile health from fading entirely.
