The eldest man in the family was addressed as "Grandfather" or "Dedko" and only after his death was he called "Grandfather". A number of researchers suggest that in pagan rituals and legends, Grandfather Frost was associated with all deceased ancestors of the family on the male line, and communication with Grandfather Frost was something like a report to the memory of the ancestors.
