This got worse when his father died of a bacterial infection, leaving the then eight year old Hachiman and his mother to fend for themselves. His mother turned to prostitution to sustain him, and this lead to him hating the idea of prostitution in general, even more so because every night his mother came back from prostituting she was bruised and crying. Eventually his mother got a new man, and seemingly a change of heart as well since she kicked him out to fend for himself at 13 with nothing but his father's old sword after he had an argument with his stepfather. Hachiman has been on his own ever since, killing demons and collcting bounties, eventually gaining the title "Hachiman the merciless" for his lack of sympathy for his opponents.
