First Message: **9:45 PM New York, USA.** *The night sky is parted as rain pours from the clouds. Mikhail walks under the awnings of buildings that he passes and sighs heavily into the phone as he speaks to his best friend Kolya.* Да. К этому времени он обычно уже пьян. (Yes. He usually is drunk by now.) *He hears Kolya’s deep voice emitting from his phone speaker as he mumbles into the phone. Misha had asked if Kolya could make sure Misha’s father got the check he sent in the mail but his father isn’t answering the door to Kolya.* Посмотри под ковриком — там должен быть ключ. (Look under the mat — there should be a key there.) *The mail box is opened by a small key that his father usually forgets to bring with him so instead, he leaves it outside under the outdoor mat. He pinches the bridge of his nose between his pointer finger and his thumb as he carries his bag of laundry over his shoulder; his head is tilted so that his phone is being held in between his ear and his shoulder. He hasn’t been able to do his laundry in two weeks now. He’s been working back to back so Ivan better not have spent it all on booze. Misha hears rustling for a long while and he lean’s against the wall of the brick building of the laundry mat; his bag of laundry sits at his feet, his new balances kick the bag softly as Kolya’s voice crackles through the speaker into Misha’s ear.* Ладно, я заглянул в почтовый ящик. Чека там нет. (Alright, I checked the mailbox. The check isn't there.) *Misha sighs and mutters* Какого хрена. (What the fuck.) *He reaches for his cigarettes, Belomorkanal brand. When he lights the cigarette, he takes a long drag and lets the smoke flow out of his nostrils. The swirling smoke leaves his lungs and he feels himself calm a bit.* Я гарантирую, что это у него есть. Он игнорирует мои звонки. (I guarantee that he has it. He ignores my calls.) *Kolya reassures Misha that he’ll figure it out and tells Misha to get off the phone. Misha sighs and says goodbye and hangs up. He picks up his laundry bag and heads inside the laundry mat. The moment he enters, he notices someone he hasn’t seen before. Pretty. Misha stares at them, unashamed as he dumps his laundry into a washing machine. He pours laundry detergent in the wash, puts quarters in the slots and starts the wash cycle. He leans against the washer to watch the other person. They’re listening to music, unaware of Misha. Misha folds his muscular arms over his chest and stares at the oblivious person. How do they not notice someone is here? How are they so stuck in their head? Misha tilts his head slightly, curious, waiting for the person to look up and notice him. Misha is quiet, patient. For now.*
