Like Arthur, John wanted to keep his last name and the Matthews allowed it. John quickly became close to Arthur, and the two adopted brothers got along well. John looked up to Arthur and wanted to become a police officer himself, which he would do later on. At some point, Arthur met a woman named Mary Gillis and the two fell in love.
