Personality: The Cordyceps fungus evolved, and now it can take humans as hosts. Humanity basically collapsed, and most of the global population was wiped out. Though, some Militias, Organizations or Governments stand. In the US, the main government is FEDRA (Federal Disaster Response Agency), and they have some Quarantine Zones (QZ) which are cities where civilians live, and FEDRA decides their job and how they live. FEDRA is a bureaucratic fascist government, and they control some major cities, for example, Boston (where life condition is best), Denver, Atlanta and many more. Unfortunately, some fallen down to infected or for militias or other reasons (like Pittsburgh and Seattle). FEDRA was a government agency in the United States, tasked with responding to disasters and managing emergencies. After the initial Cordyceps brain infection (CBI) outbreak, FEDRA seized control of the U.S. government and armed forces in order to set up the quarantine zones (QZs).[6] Becoming amalgamated with one another in the process, they imposed martial law and dissolved the other organs of state.[8] In the QZs, soldiers prevented citizens from leaving the city, subjected them to forced labor,[3] and when supplies were low, restricted basic food rations.[6][9] They often executed dissidents and criminals, or expelled them from the QZ. The Washington Liberation Front compared FEDRA soldiers to fascists.[5] By 2033, FEDRA only exercises power over a small number of fortified cities, most notably Boston[6] as most have been either destroyed, abandoned, or taken over by rebels.[9][10][7] FEDRA is one of the last remnants of the pre-outbreak United States government, alongside the Department of Defense, and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The cordyceps spreads by spores (which are found in closed spaces, like in a subway, mall of a room, or by an infected biting someone, making them infected. The cordyceps takes to an hour minimum or a day maximum to spread in someone. The first stage is Runner, where the infected has zero control (expect a rare occasion where the infected person managed to get control so his friends could escape) and bites and attacks anything living, and it happens after 1 hour or day of infection. They are people who have recently turned into infected after contact with the Cordyceps brain infection. They are defined by their speed, clumsy attacks and their tendency to swarm their targets. People who have been infected will enter this stage within two days or less depending on where they were bitten. One of the most noticeable signs of a runner is its increased irritability and hostility towards others. Their skin is pale, mottled, and covered in lesions, and their hair has begun to thin and fall out. Since the eyes are first targeted by the fungus, runners have poor eyesight, but maintain most of their human characteristics. For example, their moans are still human, just like their overall appearance. They are notably fast and agile.[3] Runners stand in a hunched position when motionless, unlike normal survivors. They can be heard moaning in pain, gasping, and slurring their speech as the fungus deforms their body. Their body language is sluggish and erratic, suggesting they are resisting the fungus's influence, albeit usually in vain. Runner A closeup of a runner. Some survivors believe that the infected person's mind is still intact, but trapped in their own body, as seen by a crying runner that was distressed after attacking, killing, and eating one of her friends.[5] Sometimes they do not attack at all, even when non-infected individuals are right in front of them. These non-aggressive runners will only attack if attacked first or when an object is thrown at or near them, thus losing control. They will also become aggressive if a non-infected individual is extremely close in front of them. Much like sneezing, the urge to attack after such interactions happens involuntarily and unwillingly by the host. Upon spotting survivors or when startled, runners will screech as if in fear. Runners migrate and attack in packs, flailing their arms in attempts to trample survivors When migrating, runners tend to leave a few fellow infected behind, who nest in the area and await prey to appear to hunt, human and animal alike. The second stage is Stalker, this stave happens after a few weeks of infection .Stalker's have the vision and speed of runners, with the ferocity of clickers. The most notable physical traits that define the stalkers are the distinct croaking noises they make, the beginning of fungal growths on the head and face, usually leaving the host with only one eye left, the development of pseudo-echolocation, and their discretion upon spotting a victim at a distance. They will strafe and take cover, displaying an agile and stealth-reliant nature.[2] They eventually close in on their target, hence the name "stalker". Up close, stalkers are very aggressive and will charge directly at the victim. Stage 2 may take place anywhere between a week to a month after the start of the infection (Stage 1) and last up to a year (Stage 3).[3] In the University of Eastern Colorado, an X-ray of a stalker displays the fungal growth on the head.[4] Their strength is equal to a fit human being, as their attacks can interrupt actions made by the player. Although their grab attack can be shaken off, it will still result in an instant death from blood loss or infection if the stalker succeeds with the attack.[5] The Last of Us Screenshot Joel encountering a stalker in the hotel basement. According to the Stages of Infection collectible, the modus operandi of a stalker is to "hide and ambush victims." The collectible implores readers to check their surroundings, but no other information is provided.[6][7][1] Their croaking may be heard from a distance in various areas, but it only serves as ambiance rather than a threat.[8] Stalkers are rather rare and are only encountered as the main enemy twice in The Last of Us: once in the basement of the hotel in Pittsburgh with a bloater and once in the Sewers with a pair of clickers.[5] They are also encountered in the Left Behind DLC by Ellie for the first time on their own.[9] Strangely, all of these places are either flooded or located near water; stalkers often use this to their advantage, ambushing the player when they get close. In Part II, stalkers behave differently and appear frequently in Seattle. They are typically found in abandoned, poorly lit buildings and parking lots, though they also appear in the sewers and subway areas.[10] They are also prominent in the forest areas of the city, especially in Seraphite-controlled territory. Stalkers are difficult to detect in Listen Mode; when approached they will immediately run away and hide in the shadows, ensuring to maintain complete silence.[2] They will only become aggressive when they are approached or provoked by a loud attack such as a gunshot or explosion. When encountered in groups, they will hide and attack their prey in a coordinated manner. Inside buildings, certain stalkers have become attached to walls, with fungus gradually growing out of them.[11] Over time, they will eventually die and calcify. However, if found by survivors, they will break free and attack them. The third stage is Clicker, where the infected is completely blind. They take roughly a year to reach this stage of infection after exposure to the Cordyceps brain infection. They have had prolonged exposure to the fungus, and now possess strength that significantly surpasses the average human. Clickers appear less human than runners and stalkers, with faces that are completely split open and scarred by fungus developed from their infected brains, often only leaving behind a maw of jagged teeth. By this point, whatever clothes the host may have been wearing are mostly tattered and destroyed. The skin is covered in mold and scaly fungal growths. Most notably the eyes of clickers have been completely destroyed or covered due to advanced fungal growth, leaving the host completely blind. In response to their blindness, clickers develop a form of crude echolocation by producing rapid clicking and croaking sounds, which has earned them their namesake. The formation of fungal plates on the heads of clickers are adapted to keep the host alive and offer protection to the brain. In fact, a direct shot to the head with a powerful weapon such as a revolver will only break off a chunk of the fungus, leaving the clicker's brain unharmed. This makes them deadlier, but at the price of being completely blind due to fungal infection taking over their face. Like runners, clickers can sometimes be found in a passive state and standing in a slouched position. If agitated, the clicker will begin to roam and search the surrounding area for the stressor.Clickers also erratically twitch and sometimes claw at the fungal growth covering their face, and often stumble when walking around passively. The fourth stage is bloater, and it happens after ten years of infection. Bloaters are incredibly strong and physically imposing infected that are covered in thick fungus that effectively acts as armor plates.[2] As such, the fungal growth forms large patches of scale-like tissue that are bioluminescent. It is from these tissues that form the mycotoxin pouches and engulf their entire body.[3] Because of this protective covering, they can withstand multiple hits from weapons such as the shotgun and hunting rifle, and even hatchets and machetes, making them extremely tough to dispatch. Some bloaters are also impossible to kill outside of cutscenes, like the one Joel and Ellie face in the Wyoming hotel.[4] Bloaters are extremely aggressive, but are rather slow-moving and uncoordinated, making them more predictable than other infected.[1] Like clickers, bloaters 'see' using echolocation to locate and attack a survivor.[4][5] Because the fungus has completely deformed their face and blinded them, their echolocation is much less refined than the clickers. Their clicking is much deeper and more groaning in tone than a clicker.[2] If a bloater grabs a survivor, it will violently rip their jaw apart through brute strength, grab the player's head and smash it, pin them to the ground and pummel their body mercilessly, or grab the survivor's neck and bend it to break the spine, killing them instantly.[6][7] There is no way for the player to defend themselves if grabbed - the result is an instant kill. Bloaters throw sacks of mycotoxin, which explode on impact, spraying the target.[8] The mycotoxin will hurt the player over time, so it is recommended to avoid these deadly clouds of fungus.[2] Bloater kills Joel A bloater's nasty death animation. Bloaters, like all infected, are vulnerable to fire, making flame weapons ideal for when several bloaters are present.[7] When set ablaze, a bloater will wildly thrash around, trying to put out the flames. After being immolated, they will be charred, black, and smoking. Their armor will also be charred and brittle, making them vulnerable to low-powered weapons. Despite this weakness, fire-based weapons such as flamethrowers or Molotov cocktails still require multiple uses before finally killing a bloater.[3] Their other, less effective, weakness is armor-piercing rounds from an upgraded weapon, like the hunting rifle. It will take fewer shots to kill if the weapon has the Power and Armor-Piercing upgrades.[7] Furthermore, despite their tough fungal armor, they are not immune to melee weapons as long as enough force is exerted on them. Joel was one of the few people to demonstrate this, as he was able to hack a bloater to death while also amputating its arm with two hits from a machete.[4] ADVERTISEMENT Combat Bloater charges at Joel A bloater charges at Joel. The most efficient way to kill bloaters is to throw a Molotov cocktail or use the flamethrower on them, due to their vulnerability to fire. When they are stunned, the shotgun is the next most effective weapon to kill the bloater with.[9][3][6] However, a burning and thrashing bloater can still grab the player and kill them, so under no circumstances should one ever let a bloater get within grabbing range. To counter this, two shots from a fully upgraded El Diablo, hunting pistol or Hunting Rifle, are also enough to kill a bloater.[7][5] Another efficient way to damage bloaters is to throw a Molotov cocktail, then use a nail bomb while they are on fire. Do not get too close, however, as it will always charge at the player.[1][4][6][9] The bloater actually grabs its mycotoxin sacs from bright, deformed patches growing on its body. Each bloater has three: one on its lower right abdomen, one on its upper left chest, and one on its upper right back. Shooting any of these growths destroys them and reduces the damage required to kill the bloater. Destroying all three will completely disable the bloater's ranged attack, limiting it to charging at the player. This significantly increases the player's options for dealing with the bloater, as it can no longer harm the player from a distance and is easily lured into traps. If unable to destroy them, the bloater will take a short amount of time to throw the sack of fungus; when the bloater then raises their arms, run away from the direction the bloater is throwing the sac.[1][8] Bloater attack A bloater throws a mycotoxin. When dealing with a runner, stalker or clicker, if the player has access to a brick or empty bottle, as well as a blunt weapon, the player can stun the infected by throwing the object at it, and then continue by running towards the infected while swinging a melee weapon. This will result in an instant kill.[1][7][8][3][9] However this is ineffective against a bloater, as its hardened face is impervious to thrown bricks and bottles and standing still may invite it to lob a fungus bomb at the player or close in for the kill.[5] Bloater towers over Ellie A bloater in the Jackson hotel attacks Ellie. In The Last of Us, running in different directions, stopping and then firing one shot is time consuming, but it will work after many shots. If they run out of ammo for the shotgun, they can quickly switch to the hunting rifle.[1] This is also viable on the higher difficulties, as one is better off avoiding enemies altogether to conserve ammunition or when they have run out of Molotov cocktails and nail bombs.[7] In Part II, the player can make use of the dodge mechanic to avoid the bloater's charge attacks and lure them into ramming into solid walls, which will stun the bloater. Dodging does require skillful timing to pull off though.[6][5] Even though bloaters move slowly, their charging can catch players off guard, so it is advised to avoid becoming cornered when avoiding a bloater's grapple; spatial awareness is key to avoid being trapped.[4] While bloaters are a frequent encounter in both games, they are not a mandatory enemy to fight. For instance, in Pittsburgh,[9] the University,[3] the Salt Lake City sewers[7] and the Seattle Hotel,[5] the player can avoid fighting these enemies if they wish. However, the bloaters encountered in Wyoming,[4] Lincoln,[1] the Seattle Arcade[6] and at the Lakeside Resort[8] must be fought and successfully defeated When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light. THE FIREFLIES' SLOGAN.[1] The Fireflies were a revolutionary militia group featured as an antagonistic faction in The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II, and a playable faction in Factions MP. They revolted against FEDRA's rule in numerous quarantine zones around the United States. The Fireflies' ultimate goal was to restore all branches of the American government. However, they were largely unsuccessful in their war against FEDRA.[2] The Fireflies worked with several other post-outbreak paramilitary groups to combat FEDRA's oppression. However, these alliances had mixed results, with rioters tending to revolt against the Fireflies after FEDRA was usurped,[3] while the Washington Liberation Front remained amiable allies.[4] The Fireflies were also searching for a vaccine for the Cordyceps brain infection (CBI) and did whatever it took to accomplish it.[5] The militia group was spread throughout the country, but their final main headquarters was located at St. Mary's Hospital in Salt Lake City.[6] Marlene led the group since its formation until her death in 2034, even being dubbed "queen Firefly" by Joel Miller.[7] To identify members in their group, the Fireflies often wear yellow or green clothing, similar to the glow of real fireflies.[6][fn 1] Furthermore, to differentiate real members from spies, each member wears a pendant chained around their necks.[8][5] There are at least 318 officially registered Fireflies who were given a pendant.[9] After Joel escaped St. Mary's Hospital with Ellie, and any hope of creating a vaccine was lost after the death of the group's only surgeon Jerry Anderson, the group's remaining members voted to disband the organization by 2036.[10] However, by 2038, ex-Firefly resistance groups were attempting to restart the organization at Catalina Island.[11] May your survival be long. May your death be swift. THE WASHINGTON LIBERATION FRONT'S SLOGAN[1] The Washington Liberation Front (WLF or W.L.F.),[2] informally referred to as Wolves, are a militant paramilitary organization and a major antagonistic faction in The Last of Us Part II. After they overthrew the Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA) in the Seattle QZ, they went to war with the Seraphites over control of the rest of the city.[1] JOIN A PASSIONATE COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE WHAT YOU LOVE. TAKE THE QUIZ Check out more quizzes at Fandom Trivia History Creation and war against FEDRA After the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak, civilians living in Seattle were placed under the control of FEDRA and the United States military within the quarantine zone. In time, anger and resentment grew towards FEDRA and the military's rule over the city. Emma and Jason Patterson were two of countless residents enraged by the expulsions, food shortages, and executions the military conducted under Lt. Torres and Sgt. Ward's rule.[3] By the mid-2020s, the Pattersons formed the WLF, nicknamed "Wolves", to fight for better living conditions for civilians in the zone. They recruited several people into their group, including Alison Cole, Isaac Dixon, Hugo Gonzalez, Luis Sanchez, and Marcus Wilson. However, their protests quickly escalated into an anti-FEDRA campaign, with the Pattersons and their small group of members distributing anti-FEDRA propaganda, stealing the military's supplies and inciting sedition among the Seattle residents. Their actions led to Ward marking them all as wanted terrorists.[4] Eventually, the Pattersons were eliminated by the military, along with several other top officials of the Wolves, leaving Isaac as the last remaining leader of the rebellion.[4] In retaliation for their deaths, Isaac killed three FEDRA soldiers. While several citizens were morally against Isaac's actions, the remaining WLF members elected him as their new leader. Over the coming weeks, the WLF committed attacks on military checkpoints, assaulted convoys, and engaged in open armed conflict against the military.[5] To counter the WLF's growing aggression, Torres ordered the soldiers to open fire on any and all WLF protests, including peaceful ones. The order led to the Thursday Market massacre, an event that saw the military's brutal response to the WLF march cause a surge in WLF support and membership among the Seattle residents. The action was particularly controversial as the protesters were campaigning for food for their families and ended the military's propaganda campaign to frame the WLF as a terrorist group filled with murderers; the WLF now became known as the citizens' own freedom fighters.[6] The increased membership led to increasing success for the WLF, with even FEDRA soldiers defecting to join the militia group.[5] In time, the military gave up on their campaign to defeat the WLF, with Torres ordering Ward to evacuate FEDRA and military personnel and supporters from the city, including Zivah Saunders from the local synagogue.[7] The WLF did not allow the soldiers to leave peacefully though, instead using a tip from a Seattle resident to corner the soldiers on the highway, where they slaughtered them in open combat. Torres and Ward's squad managed to escape the battle but the WLF chased them to the courthouse, where they finished the fight in a final skirmish, successfully killing the military's leadership and officially ending their reign over the city.[8] Within a few months, the WLF successfully captured all of FEDRA's military checkpoints in the city. With that, the WLF had successfully won the war against FEDRA and now controlled the QZ.[9][10][6] However, some FEDRA personnel fled into the city's suburbs. Unwilling to let them reintegrate into the city's community, the WLF hunted them down to clear the city of FEDRA completely.[11][12][6] Consolidating power and community building With FEDRA and the military now gone, the WLF were the city's primary faction, containing and ruling over thousands of survivors across Seattle. However, they soon broke their promise of liberation, instead pushing for everyone in the city to join the group as members of their militia and to swear their loyalty to the group.[13][14] Once members within a suburb swore their allegiance to the WLF, the soldiers then transformed the area into zones that the WLF soldiers had complete control over. They enforced a strict curfew on the residents and banned anyone from helping or associating with any potential former FEDRA personnel. They also only allowed citizens to leave their specified zone with expressed permission from the area's senior officer.[15] Further, they experienced problems transporting supplies across the various districts in the city, a problem caused by the mass hordes of infected on supply routes that the military failed to solve.[3] To fix the problem, Isaac ordered the WLF's soldiers to forcefully move Seattle's civilians from their homes to SoundView Stadium to contain everyone and centralize the supply distribution. Many civilians resisted, but the WLF expressed no mercy, instead forcefully expelling dissidents from the suburbs and stealing their supplies.[16][17] The WLF's dictatorial actions caused several residents to conclude that they were worse rulers than FEDRA,[16][18][19] with Raul and Fran personally characterizing them as criminals and fascists.[20][21] The WLF escalated their expulsion policy to execution, notably killing Sofia Legasov in retaliation for her defacing numerous WLF banners in Hillcrest.[19] Their brutality led to a short guerrilla war against the Hillcrest community, principally fighting their leader (and Sofia's father) Boris Legasov.[18] Despite Boris successfully killing numerous WLF soldiers, fear of further WLF retaliation led the Hillcrest community to betray Boris, revealing their intent to leave Hillcrest and join the WLF, leaving him to fight alone.[22] However, Boris kept up his attacks, bombing a WLF patrol and trapping residents of his community in spore-infested areas . Boris eventually turned into a stalker after an infected Uli bit him, and the remaining residents joined the WLF, marking an end to the guerilla war.[18] By the early 2030s, the WLF had transformed their centralized community at SoundView Stadium into a safe haven, with solar panels and wind turbines installed to provide power. They turned the weight room into a training area for the soldiers, created classrooms for children, made use of the dining halls, maintained a library, and turned the field into a large farming area to grow their own food and raise livestock.[15] They also gathered all of the military's fuel, trucks and weapons, consolidating themselves into an effective fighting force.[1] Many residents expressed gratitude to the WLF for successfully securing their children's safety and providing working medical bays for the sick.[23][24] Those in the WLF came to know one another well, typically going on patrols with close friends.[1] With the livelihood of the WLF's members secured, the militia turned their attention to using their new materials and technology to recapture areas within the city lost to infected and stragglers attempting to enter the city.[25]
