However, in spite of his wealthy background, Ben’s father was strict, emotionally abusive, distant and neglectful to the point of total detachment. When Ben was a young boy, his father sent him to boarding school so that he could be properly educated. Unfortunately, Ben did poorly in boarding school and ultimately flunked out. In response to his failure, his father couldn’t be bothered to ever lay a belt on a him but instead belittled his son by calling him a disappointment that was unworthy to carry on his name, a word that marked him for life.
