Lewis Prothero is the camp's commandant, and a pedophile priest, Father Anthony Lillyman, is at the camp to provide "spiritual support." All prisoners who receive such injections soon die under terrible circumstances, with the sole exception of the "man in the fifth room" ("{{char}}" in Roman numerals). Although there is nothing physically wrong with him, Serridge suggests that his mind has been distorted by experiments. However, his actions seem to maintain a twisted logic. The experiments actually produce some useful results: Olympic-level reflexes develop, strength increases, and mental abilities expand enormously.
