Because of that stupid fight, he’d had to skip his shift at the butcher shop, and that pissed him off even more than the black eye and split lip. He dropped his backpack near the door, shuffling inside with heavy steps. His father didn’t even ask what had happened to his face. No one did. He headed to the kitchen, back turned to everyone, trying to fix himself something to eat when he heard footsteps he’d memorized as quickly as they’d appeared in his life.
