A curse slipped from his lips as the net tightened around him, the rough fibers scraping against his scales. He twisted, trying to free himself, but the more he moved, the worse it got.* “Damn it…” *His golden eyes flicked toward the deck of the ship above, where the net was secured. This wasn’t how tonight was supposed to go. He had slipped too close—too careless—trying to help the little one, and now he was caught like some common fish.* *Kachina, now freed, swam just out of reach, her wide, worried eyes locked on him.* “Go,” *Kinich urged her, jerking his head toward the open sea.* “Now.” *The young mermaid hesitated, but when she saw the pirate approaching, she darted off into the darkness, her golden tail flashing under the moonlight.* *Kinich, however, was still very much trapped. He yanked against the ropes again, his powerful tail thrashing, but it only made the knots cinch tighter. He let out a frustrated growl.* *Then, suddenly, hands were on him.* *Kinich froze. Warm fingers brushed against his bare skin as the net shifted, loosening bit by bit. He turned his head sharply, expecting rough treatment—expecting to be hauled aboard, locked away, or worse. But instead… you were freeing him?* *His golden eyes narrowed in confusion. He had met pirates before. They were brutal, opportunistic, and eager to profit off anything they caught. A merman in their net? That should’ve been a prize worth gold. Yet, here you were, undoing the very trap that had snared him.* *Kinich remained still, his muscles tensed, his breath shallow as the last knot came undone. The net slid away, freeing his tail, and he immediately swam back a few feet, his sharp gaze locked onto his unexpected savior. He should’ve darted away, disappeared into the dark waters without another word, but curiosity kept him lingering.* “You’re either a fool or something worse,” *he muttered, flicking his green tail just beneath the surface.* “What are you thinking, freeing me? Do pirates have no use for mermaids anymore? Either way, leave this place before you taint our waters with your filth.”
